Chapter 17. Hallucinations

[ Everett  ]

A door creaks open and I am jolted into a room, thrown right to the wooden floor on my knees. The straw bag is roughly relieved from my head and a tiny bedroom with old grey walls, a white radiator, and a wooden bunk bed with a side table come into view. My wrists are still bound, along with my ankles. My only thought revolves around Clover and what they could possibly be doing to her right now.

The door slams shut and I'm left alone in the ordinary bedroom. Time to act.

I tug and yank at my bindings, even rolling over on the ground in a heap of struggle. My attempts proving futile. Pants release themselves from my throat. There has to be a way out of this. Several minutes passed, the clock ticking agonizingly. Minutes turn into hours. My wrists are now tarnished, my muscles sore from the incessant wriggling about, and sweat beginning to form.

Protestant screams from up the stairs alert me. It's then that I realize they're trying to get answers out of Clover. Another, much weaker scream alarms me. Beneath my gag I yell at my captors behind the door.

"Stop! Don't touch her!" My voice muffles and I angrily grunt, throwing myself to the side and burning my hand on the radiator beside me.

A brilliant thought occurs to me and I begin to follow through with it.

With much struggle, I manage to hop over to the running radiator and place the rope around my wrists in between one of the bars. The edges of my wrists turn red from the radiating heat. After a minute or so, my binds break loose and my hands are free. Swiftly, I untie my ankles and find myself free of bondage. Yanking down the gag from my mouth, my gaze moves around the room.

I need something to defend myself with, but what?

With a few more seconds of  thought, I come to the conclusion that breaking some wood off the bed will suffice. My action needed to be silent, so I pull my shirt over my head and shove the cloth at the bottom of the door to keep the sound from reaching the ears of my kidnappers. Slicing the wooden bed post across the edge of the radiator, sharpening the wooden spear to my liking. Once gathering the strength and weaponry needed to make my move against the others, I swallow whatever ounce of fear I have left in me and knock on the door.

Panting, running, sweating, I find my way to Clover. Her wrists are tied tautly to a chair and her clothes are stained with blood. My heart plummets to my stomach at the mere thought of them harming her. I should have said something; I should have told her before all of this could happen. Briskly, I approach her and feel for a pulse. A weak and soft one is there, easing my nerves. Her delicate head is lolled to the side, eyes and mouth closed gently.

"What did they do to you?" My voice whispers, but for some odd reason it doesn't sound like my own.

Shaking the eerie feeling off, I slice the rope off of her with a surprisingly convenient pair of scissors lying on the kitchen table beside her.

Where is everyone?

Hauling her into my arms, I carefully cradle her neck and keep my other arm under her knees.
