"So how's dating the schools big shot going?" Beth asks as we watch everyone from upon the bleachers.
So far Graham and I have been dating for about two weeks and between the long hours of school and Graham practicing practically every day we've barely talked. I mean sure he drives me to and from school every day and up until he drives me home at the end of the day, we're together. But he hasn't even asked me on a date.
"Okay, I guess." I give a shrug of my shoulders, taking my eyes off of my history textbook to look for the one in question. It looks like they're just about done so I begin packing my homework in to my backpack.
Ever since football practice started Graham insists he still drive me home everyday. Although the plan was for me to wait in the library where the air conditioning is, I realized Graham enjoys when I watch him play. He may not have said it, but the way his face lit up when Beth suggested I watch on the bleachers I couldn't refuse.
Now here we are sitting out in the blazing sun sweating the day away as we watch even sweatier football players and cheerleaders run and bounce around.
"What's wrong?" She takes my lead and puts away her papers, handing me the textbook. I usually bring the books since I'm the one with the boyfriend that doesn't like for me to lift a finger.
I zip up my bag with a sigh. "Don't you think its weird Graham and I haven't been on a date yet."
"Very," Roxanne replies as she plops down on the seat at Beth's feet. Big mistake. Beth kicks her, making one of her pom poms fall a couple bleachers down. Roxanne gives a pout which Beth ignores.
"What she means to say is that everyone goes at their own pace in relationships." She finishes with a big hopeful smile. Making me come to the conclusion that something is definitely wrong.
The hysterical laughter coming from Roxanne is the only thing that stops Beth from smiling ear to ear. "You sound like a mom explaining sex," she says between her fits of laughing.
Beth looks appalled, but I can't help but agree with Roxanne and start laughing. Momentarily forgetting about the self conscious thoughts I'm having about Graham not asking me out on a date. Which have been coming more frequently as the days go by with Graham only asking me about my day and what I would like to eat.
"Well now that you two have had a laugh at my expense I think it's time to leave." Beth huffs out as she throws her backpack over her shoulder. She starts walking down the steps and Roxanne and I follow her lead. All the while Roxanne giggles behind her hand.
I don't see him, but I know it's him as soon as the smell of peppermint engulfs my nostrils. He's always the first one in the locker room and the first one out. Although he's never said it I can tell he does it for my benefit because every time he's done he says... "Sorry I took so long."
"You weren't long." I smile at him and begin tying up my hair. He gives me a smirk as he kisses my forehead. Graham walks to his car with my backpack over one shoulder and his gym bag in his hand. I never see him grab my backpack, but he always ends up carrying it. This is pretty much routine for us everyday when football practice is over.
I love the small kisses he places on my cheek and forehead. I even love how much of a gentle man he is with opening doors for me and holding my things even though he knows that I would much rather be the one to carry them. In fact we've got in to a couple disputes because of him always insisting on carrying everything for me. Which is probably why he tends to grab my things while I'm not paying attention.
"Well if your done staring at your boyfriends ass now, I'd like to say good-bye."
My head immediately turns away from Graham and I shoot Roxanne daggers with my eyes. "I was not staring at his butt I was just lost in thought."
