Chapter 02 ~ Party

Owen Bailey

When I got into this lifestyle, I promised myself that I would never pick up strays along the way. Doing so would only force me to look out for them and care for them and I would much rather not have to babysit a bunch of amateurs.

But that was exactly what I ended up doing because one of the new additions to our team, Ake, couldn't do anything right. He was fresh out of high school, which should've been my cue to run as fast as I could, but I took him under my wing because he reminded me of a younger version of myself.

Damn these paternal instincts.

"Stop squirming," I spat at the black haired boy as I gave him a deadpan expression and held up an alcohol-doused cloth to his bruised cheek.

My instructions were clear: talk to the drug dealer, ask him how his day was, ask about his family, then kindly ask for a new batch of weed. Under no circumstances did I tell him to try to bargain with the drug dealer to lower the price. Because he was such a stubborn piece of shit, he got himself beat up and we ended up losing the only good deal we had.

"It hurts, you motherfucker," he hissed, his amber eyes burning with anger.

"Deal with it." I motioned for him to hold the cloth against his face while I moved my attention to the side of his stomach where a sickening cut was stretched over his rib cage. Without any warning whatsoever, I poured about half of the alcohol in my flask onto the area. Ake sucked in a sharp breath and squeezed his eyes shut, but I simply ignored him. I finished up by tying a t-shirt tightly around his waist to stop further bleeding. "We'll get Jonah to check you out, but you should be good, for now."

With a sigh of relief, Ake jumped out of my truck, but I pinned him against the cargo bed before he could get far. "And next time, don't fuck things up for us or I'll cut you loose."

He rolled his eyes. "Yeah, whatever."

"Now buy us something to drink," I demanded as I released my grip on him. I kept a trained eye on him as he scrambled to his feet and retreated to the passenger seat to retrieve the necessary money.

A pixie haired blonde joined my side shortly after and clicked her tongue in disapproval. "You're gonna hurt his Ake-y breaky heart."

I rolled my eyes and fixed my gaze on the blonde's attire - a white tank top that was short enough to reveal her pierced navel and a pair of skin tight, ripped jeans. Once I got enough of her eye candy, I looked back at Ake, who was rummaging through the front seat. "He deserves it, Raven," I told her. "He can't follow simple instructions."

Raven quirked a brow. "Hmm, sounds like someone we know, doesn't it?"

I spared her a glance. Raven and I started this lifestyle together when we graduated from high school and realized that we didn't have any plans for the future. We found ourselves getting involved with the most powerful and influential drug lord in the city—Lucifer.

As one would imagine, there was a reason why he went by the that name. It was because he was the devil, literally and figuratively. He would make us do things that were less than desirable, he would make our lives a living hell and he would make us wish we were dead. I couldn't recall how many times we had been beaten and taken advantage of simply because we didn't do what he told us to do.

We found our way out, but we were still constantly looking over our shoulder because of what he did to us.

Raven cleared her throat to snap me out of my thoughts. Her bright blue eyes settled on mine, which, even in the darkness of the night, always managed to calm me. Her arms reached up to snake around my neck, pulling me closer. "I'm just fucking with you," she tagged on with a wide grin.
