Baby you're all I need
Come and set me freeChapter 23 ~ Wildfire

Things were finally starting to make sense.
It took being jumped by a group of racist pricks, being kidnapped by a just-as-racist prick, and going back and forth with said racist prick for things to start making sense. Kissing Owen made sense, being near him made sense, and and the thought of keeping him around for a very long time made perfect sense—at least to me.
So I couldn't quite help the feeling of pure bliss taking over my body when I entered my house after an adventurous day with Owen. It was all I could think about, actually, which meant I was unprepared for the moment when Raven jogged down the grand staircase with incredible speed to greet me. There was a grin stretched across her seemingly always-red lips, and her arms were folded against her chest in a contrasting disapproving manner.
"So, how was it?" were the first words that left her mouth, which were then followed by, "Where's Owen?"
"He's taking care of a few things," I said simply, deciding not to share all the details of our elaborate date—not like she'd be the least bit surprised of Owen's ability to steal a car. "And everything went well."
Her eyebrow quirked. "Yeah? You guys fucked?"
Swallowing down the lump forming in my throat, I forced a friendly smile. Raven gave the impression that she was okay with the love of her life clearly not reciprocating her feelings, but it was still a hard idea to grasp. "Raven..."
"What," she spat, "it's a valid question."
I nodded. "Yeah, I guess it is, but it's kinda out there, don't you think?" Raven continued to stare at me with those piercing blue eyes of hers, unmoving, so I decided to satisfied her curiosity. "If you must know, then no, we didn't have sex."
She shook her head in disbelief and said, "Damn, he never listens to me!" before throwing her hands in the air in exasperation and sauntering over to another section of the house. My brows furrowed in confusion at her sudden outburst, but I shook the thought away; instead, deciding to catch up with Rita. Only when I breezed into the kitchen which always seemed to be Rita's go-to hangout spot, I was slightly taken aback by Jonah's presence by her side, a little too close for my comfort.
He lifted his head to look at me, and a smile crept onto his lips. "Hey."
"Hello..." I barely glanced at him before giving my full attention to the housekeeper. "How's everything?"
"Swell," she replied promptly. "Did you know that Jonah, here, is a doctor?"
Yeah, an ex-doctor that lost his license for convicted robbery, I wanted to say, but knew that would've been too much for Rita's heart to take, so I sufficed for a, "Really?"
"He's such a wonderful man," she continued to inflate his ego, "it's a shame that you find all the wrong men to be interested in. First, that Patterson kid, and now that misguided drug addict. Why can't you find someone nice like Jonah?" She lifted her dark eyes to meet the man beside her, giving him a proud look in which he responded with a smug smirk.
