Heartless

Days turned into weeks. I wouldn't leave the hospital, unless it was for school purposes. I'd go home once a week and I'd get a supply of clean clothes before coming right back.

Kyani would come to the hospital with me too, I'd have to call Gary to pick her up when she'd eventually fallen asleep.

The rest of the gang would be here before I'd arrive too. We'd see one another when they'd be on their way out.

Bex, who continously apologises for not being able to stay during the week would be at the hospital on a Friday afternoon before I could get there.

He'd either animatedly talk to Kenlan, about things I'd never been able to hear because he'd notice me almost immediately, or he'd play on his guitar and sing me to sleep.

It'd be that or he'd flirt with me and joke about how Ken would accept him immediately because of his charm. However he'd avoid any conversation about Kenlan's accident.

"Cheeks, Yana. Wake up. " Bex shook on my thigh. My current position was pretty awkward. My head leaned on Kenlan's chest and my legs rested on the armrest that Bex sat in.

My parents stood on each side of the chair. "Eli'Yana, what happened?" My mother questioned, in an iced tone with her arms crossed. "And who's this?" My father questioned, his eyes digging into Bex' head.

"Someone knocked him over in the parking lot of the mall." Bex spoke. Casting his eyes away from every stare directed at him. Taking a deep breath he stood up. "My Name is Becker North. It's a pleasure to meet you both Mr and Mrs Dreekan.  He stretched his hand out shaking my father's and then placing a kiss on the back of my mother's hand.

Why was he treating him with so much respect? Their youngest child was lying in a coma, they're here weeks too late. Bex squeezed onto my shoulder. I looked up at him "I'll be back." He smiled and I only nodded.

My father replaced Bex in the bedside chair and my mother gracefully sat on his lap. "What are you doing here?" I asked them. "We're his parents Eli'Yana, we have to be here." My mother said, putting her hand on my own.

I laughed and pulled my hand away. "It's funny you know. You don't need to be here like you think you do. I covered for you two when you left last month."

I struggled to fight back the tears, forming at the brim of my eyes. "He is only fourteen and he's got the mind of an adult because ever since he was four years old, he and I had to feind for ourselves because those nanny's you'd appointed to each of us got paid to sit and talk about whose hot and not." My voice rose at every word.

My mother's laugh annoyed me. "You don't get it do you Eli?" I chuckled. "No Ma, I really don't get it." "Don't you dare use that tone with your mother." I looked at my father, who now towered over me. "Fine. Then I'll use it with you." I spoke with an even angrier tone. He thought that he'd intimidate me.

A tear fell from my eye when I realised how alike my father was to my brother. Forget the curly hair and light brown freckles that adorned their cheekbones.

Kenlan and my father have both got these intimidating personalities. This was how come I didn't cower away, it felt like I had been arguing with Kenlan.

"Eli'Yana, we're not fit parents. We can't take care of you or your brother." I laughed at my father's statement. "Are you stupid or something? How dare you say that? You're our parents, you're supposed to know what to do with your children dad."

My mother's hand rested on my shoulders. "Eli, what your father is trying to say is,  we'll keep the house and assets you buy on our name, but we're leaving. We'll pass by again before our flight. " "Leaving? Jesus , your goddamn son is in the hospital and you can only think about leaving?"

My father sighed, making his way to stand beside my mother. He rubbed his hand over his face.

"Eli,  we're busy people who have no love for anybody else besides our job and one another." My father's voice was loud, it pierced deep as if it was a knife. I looked at my mother, her expression was stoic. "You, you don't love us?" Her head moved side to side.

I mimicked her movements and before I could stop myself, my hand flew across her face. "You bitch." I whispered. "Get out." I really broke apart when the pair didn't even protest. My father wrapped is arm over my mother's shoulders and strode out.

I gripped the collar of Kenlan's gown. "You have to wake up now!" I shouted repetitively until I felt fingers flex around my shoulders, pulling me off of my brother. "I need you."

Bex pulled me into him, hugging me tight as he fell into the bedside chair. "Shhh, cheeks it's okay." His whispers calmed me down and soon enough I had fallen asleep,  comfortably in his arms.

It's Sunday afternoon,  two days after my parents told me their true feelings. Bex had promised that he wouldn't leave the room again when they'd come again.

I was currently texting Zeyaana, I felt like I was carrying a weight on my shoulders and I always felt better when I spoke to her. Bex was packing his bag, so that when late afternoon came around, all he had to do was walk out. "Hey, I'm going to get something to eat? You want anything?" He shook his head in response.

I'd gone to buy myself a juice, a packet of chips and a chocolate. I'd met Kyani as I walked back to the room, she only greeted as walked together in silence.

I heard Bex' voice and slowed in my steps. Stretched my arm out for Kyani to do the same. When we reached the door, Bex leaned onto the bed by his elbows as he talked to Kenlan.

His eyes trained on the bed as he spoke. His voice grew louder as I got closer to the room door and leaned against it. Kyani stood not far behind me.

A hand rested on my shoulder. I turned around and saw that Kyani had come closer because my parents were here too.

"I remember telling you how much I like your sister. How I thought that she was pretty cool to be around. I wish I knew that you were talking about the same girl when you told me about her before the accident Ken, I'd spare her the pain and pulled you away long before."

His grip on the bed tightened as he continued to speak.  "I don't like the way she looks at you, like it should have been her. I don't know much about your parents too but I don't like them either. They hurt Eli, and I don't like it when the people I love get hurt. I love her Ken."

I wiped the tears out of my eyes as a smile stretched out on my lips. A hoarse voice responded to Bex' rant. "She's right at the door if you didn't notice." He cleared his throat.  "And just so you know, saving my life just saved your own." He continued as Bex' gaze fell on my own. His soft eyes hardened almost immediately. I walked into the room and engulfed my brother in a hug.  Kyani and my parents followed.

Bex gripped my waist tight while I moved out of the way. "Who are you?" He asked them.
