We walked along the pavement, Bonnie pushing Ben in the stroller, her hair up in a messy bun, leaves falling all around us. We turned onto a busy road, it was the only way to get to the supermarket, and we thought it was a nice enough day to walk.
'Auntie Bonnie!' We heard, as both of us turned to see Liv, her parents must've dropped her in town or something. She waved, and began to run across the road to see Bonnie.
'WATCH OUT!' Bonnie yelled, as Liv let out a scream. In the blink of an eye, she was on the floor, and Bonnie abandoned the buggy to run to her aid. I whipped out my phone and called for an ambulance, and when it arrived, they lifted Liv ever so gently into the ambulance, a big gash on her forehead. I ran home with Ben and strapped him into the car, heading up to the hospital. I went to reception.
'Olivia James?' I asked, as the lady looked at me, pushed up her glasses and typed something into her database.
'Room 107.' She said bluntly, pointing to a set of big glass doors. I paced over to the ward, and peeked inside the door, the doctors had there back to me, so I couldn't see what was going on. I noticed Bonnie, with her head in her hands, and put a hand lightly on her back, she looked up at me, her eyes red around the rim where she had been crying. Scott and Sarah were next to her, holding each others hands.
A young looking Doctor came out of the room, and everyone rose to their feet.
'I'm terribly sorry.' He began. 'There was nothing more we could do.' Sarah burst out into tears, Bonnie sunk into my arms and Scott started trembling, he kicked over a chair and walked out of the room, punching and shattering the glass door on his way out.
I held Bonnie in my arms for the next 20 minutes, until she asked where Scott was - I told her to rest while I found him. Wandering down the corridor, I couldn't help but imagine how hard it must be for Scott and Sarah, losing a child that they had loved and cared for, for over 14 years.
Eventually I found him, in the corridor, slouched on the floor, practically ripping out his hair, tears streaming down his face.
'Why us? We're good people. We go to church every Sunday, we donate to all sorts of charities, we have jobs to pay our taxes. What did we do to deserve this?' He said, looking back and forth from me to the floor.
'I know it's tough. When my Dad died of a heart-attack, we had to cancel shows, interviews, everything. I refused to get over it. I couldn't believe that something like that would happen to my family. It took me a long time to realise that, you can't change the past. You never, ever have to forget Liv, you just need to look to the future, and know in your heart that she would want you to go on with your life.' I helped him up, and he patted me on the shoulder
'Thanks mate, really.' He said, as we walked together back to the waiting room.
*Bonnie's POV*
I held Ben in my arms, I couldn't comprehend what happened to Liv, well couldn't, or wouldn't? I touched Ben's cheek with my finger, and he giggled, I would never let anything happen to him.
'I rang the church, and we can have the funeral on the 27th. Would you like to come?' my brother stated, coming to grips with what had happened. I shook my head, I couldn't handle saying goodbye to her like that, she would have wanted me to remember her as she was, not being buried in a hole in the ground.
'Dom, can we go home?' I whispered, he was being so brave, and I admired him for that. He nodded and held my hand as we pushed the buggy back to the car and strapped Ben in.
We got home and I put a sleeping Bennett into his cot gently, and tucked him in his white cotton blanket. I walked into the living room and Dom held out a mug of coffee with a smile.
