Chapter 19
Cara and Patrick ran into the hospital room just as I was falling asleep next to Gwen on the guest chairs.
I had gotten all of the information because I had been the only one there before Gwen ran in cursing about “All the fucking traffic!”
The doctors had run a blood test, which showed that Landon was slightly anemic. Which basically meant that her blood was lacking iron which hemoglobin in the blood needs to carry oxygen throughout the body. They assumed that it was based on recent diet habits.
Landon awoke long enough to tell a doctor that she had tried “these past two weeks to stick to a vegetarian life style.”
Cara practically jumped on top of me, “Where’s my baby? What did they do with my baby?”
“She hit her the front head when she passed out so right now they are running a CAT scan. She should be back in the next half hour.” I rubbed my eyes and looked at Cara.
She started bawling and Gwen and Patrick closed in on her to comfort her.
Patrick looked over at me above his wife’s head, “Do you know the reason for her passing out yet?”
“Yea. The last couple weeks she said she tried eating vegetarian, which caused a lack of iron in her blood. So she’s slightly anemic, and that’s what caused her to pass out. She hit her head on the corner of her desk as she collapsed and that may have caused, as the doctors believe, a moderate concussion.” I stated as calmly as I could. “She drifts in and out of consciousness, and we try to get as much information and testing in when we can. So far the doctors believe she is in something called “cloudy consciousness.” She has no recollection of actually falling but can remember everything up until I walked into her room to ask her the homework question. She even says she could hear what we were saying in the ambulance but it was like her eyelids just wouldn’t open.”
Cara cried, “She will be okay right?”
I shook my head, “Until the CAT scan comes back we won’t know for sure.”
An entire hour passed before Landon was wheeled back in, IV in arm and oxygen tubes in her nose.
Cara whimpered at the sight, and Patrick held her tightly. Gwen leaned into my arm like she had done earlier today at the sight of her fallen sister. Even I shuddered seeing Landon look so small and helpless on that white hospital bed.
Cara walked up to her fourth oldest daughter, “Landon? Can you hear me sweetie?” Landon made no movements or sounds. Cara grabbed her pale hand and cupped it in her own. “If you can hear me squeeze my hand.”
There was a long pause. I hadn’t even realized it but I had held my breath.
“She flinched! Patrick she flinched! Her hand twitched! She can hear us!” Cara turned around excitedly. “When will she wake up for good?”
