666 Days Before

Liz. I'm hungry. A sigh escaped as I noticed that we weren't just hungry, we were dying. Its been two and a half weeks since my last meal and eight days since my brothers. We had plenty of water, but there was no where near enough for us to stay in this shitty barn much longer. Soon we were going to be forced to leave, putting us in more of a risk of being taken.

I know baby boy. I'm going as soon as its dark out. I'll bring back so much food, you won't believe it all fit in my bag. I felt bad for having to lie to him. There wasn't any houses for miles in either direction. It would take me all night to get to a house, the I would have to hide there for the day and come back as soon as it was dark. He would be unprotected for a whole day without me there to watch and make sure he doesn't make a peep.

Just don't do anything stupid big sis. I don't care how much food you gather, just stay safe. But... He trailed of, a thoughtful look on his face before he continued. If you find any chocolate, make sure to grab as much as you can.

Of course, I was going to grab him some if I find any. There probably wouldn't be any food in any of the houses if those men had their way with the place. Every other we've come across has been looted to the point that there wasn't even floorboards in some.

We sat in silence, patiently waiting for the sun the set, hiring our bellies every time they make a sound. I was so exhausted and I was still in for a long night ahead of me if I was going to play scavenger for my brother. I wouldn't be able to sleep for at least another twenty four hours. Someone might as well staple my eyelids open so I would stay awake forever cause thats what it felt like right now. Its been already two days since I last went to sleep. Charles has been having nightmares and I had to stay awake to make sure he was quiet. What he was dreaming about, he never told me even though I was practically begging him.

Hour after hour, minute after minute, second after second, we sat in the same spot even though Charles couldn't help but move every now and again, but at least he wasn't being as loud anymore. When it was finally pitch black outside, I grabbed my almost empty back pack, made Charles lay down in the loft before leaving.

The smell of damp grass was the first thing I noticed as the barn door closed behind me. The second being the pinecone that I stepped on with my bare foot. It took everything one not to scream at the irony. Pinecones are my worst enemy I tell you. This was the third time this week that I've stepped on one.

Limping, I walked towards the house that I knew was going to be the closest. There was only a couple more hours left before the sun was going to rise, the I'd be stuck until nightfall.

The only sound you could hear as the sound of crunching leaves and snapping twigs as I ran as fast as possible. Rocks and pinecones slowed my down, but I couldn't stop. Not now when Charles was waiting for me. He needed food. Hell, I needed food too. Already, my vision was blurring and I had slowed down considerably. What I would give for a bacon cheeseburger right now.

An owl hooted in the distance, forcing me to stop. Who could have disturbed the poor animal? It was probably me, but I didn't want to take any chances. If there was someone out there, then I was probably going die any minute now.

I looked around me, finally seeing my surroundings for the first time since I had left. The trees here were a huge and stood tall, oaks and pine trees and others surrounded me. Every last one of them stood tall and proud. Not one was a baby tree sprouting from the rich soil under my feet. Even in the dark, you could see the dark emerald leaves glisten with dew.

A gust of wind blew my hair into my face, some getting in my mouth. After, brushing it out of my face once again, I started running even faster, not caring how loud I was at this at this point. Footsteps were cooking from right behind me, closing in fast.

I knew that wouldn't be able to last much longer. Already, I was slowing down, my breath coming out by the bucketful.

"Little girl. Little girl. Where did you go? I just want to play a little game." A man's voice was literally the only thing that I could hear. It was like an out of body experience. On moment I was in my body, running for my life, the next I was watching as I ran through the forest, branches cutting my body with each step.

What I thought was a man was actually a teenager no older than myself. He had short blonde hair that barely touched his ears. He was too far away for me to tell his eye color, but they had to be a dark color.

It seemed like forever before I returned to my body only to find that I was lying face down in a field, pain exploding from my ankle as I struggled to stand up, to run, to do anything to get away from that man. Believe or not, but I am of a stupid person. We were in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the woods, us being the only two out here I hope, and him having that creepy vibes echoing throughout the forest. Does this not scream horror movie at you?

In the distance, I could see a lone house. It was tattered d broken, but there had to be at least a few hiding places in there. Even a closet would be better than standing out in e open. At least, I think that I would better hiding than in the open.

"Girly! Come out. Come out. Wherever you are! I just want to have some fun before I have to go home. See the sun is rising and my mom will be expecting me home any minute now." I could hear the smirk on his face. There was no way that he would listen to a word that his mother said. That is, if she is even alive.

"I'm getting mad. You don't want me to cheat now. My cheating gets a little," he paused for more dramatic effect. "deadly."

My blood ran cold as I opened the front door, praying that he doesn't me. Right as I was closing the door, a strong draft ran through the house, ripping the door from my hand, slamming it shut behind me. Fuck my life.

"Princess, I heard that. You know you aren't that good of a ninja." What did he just call me? "Did I tell you that I know where your brother is? One word from me, and my men can bring him here so I can kill him in front of you. However, I must say, you ran quite a long way for a girl."

The house was in shambles. Floorboards had fallen from the ceiling, some still dangling by a nail. Black mold mixed with the dark green moss covering very inch of the walls. A winding staircase was missing several steps before it finally ends, no more stairs, just broken pieces of wood hanging down. There was a good ten foot gap between where the stairs end and where they start up again.

If luck was on my side for once today, then I probably would be able to make that jump. However, lately luck has been hiding from me. If they knew where my brother was, then I needed to get to him as fast as possible. I took one step nb the stairs and almost fell over when was of dizziness hit me like a hurricane.

The world was spinning me round and round as I fought to see straight. The wood under my feet smelled of decaying wood and was damp to the touch. With one wrong foot anywhere, anyone could fall straight down into the basement. Taking a deep breath, I stood up and tip toed up the stairs.

Knock, knock, knock. "I'm coming in on the count of three. Wouldn't want to drag out our little game of hidend seek now would we?" A tear slipped down my face as I realized that this was the place where I was going to die. I would never get to see Charles ever again. And just think, I promised him that I would stay safe. My last few moments on earth and I am breaking the last promise that I had made to the only person I cared more about than life itself.

Please forgive me my baby brother. I never ment to leave you by yourself. I should be just stayed home. I signed one last time before the door opened.
