I was standing on a chair, trying to hang a banner that said 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKEY!' in colorful letters. Brendon came over, holding up the other side and taping it.
"Thanks," I said.
"No problem," he replied.
Brendon has been out of school after he got suspended. He was suspended for a week after he tried getting high off expo markers during the middle of our Spanish class. I wouldn't expect anything less from him.
"Hey, Frank, can you help Gerard with the balloons?" Ray asked. "I have to go answer my phone, it's my boss."
I nodded and went over into the living room where Gerard was surrounded by deflated balloons. The helium tank was in between his legs to keep it up straight and balloons covered the ceiling.
"I was told to help by Ray," I said as I sat beside him on the couch.
"Yeah, okay," he said.
He put the tank in between us and we started blowing up the balloons silently.
"Hey," Gerard said, bumping me with his elbow.
He breathed in the helium from the balloon and smiled in satisfaction.
"Hi, I'm Gerard!" He exclaimed in a high-pitched, chipmunk-like voice. "I like punk music and comics!"
I laughed, taking a breath of helium for myself.
"I'm Frank!" I cheered, my voice all squeaky. "I love Mikey Way!"
Gerard laughed in a high pitched tone.
"I love smoking and singing!" Gerard added, his voice slightly deeper again.
"It sounds like you just went through puberty all in one sentence, Gee," I joked. "It started high then got deeper again."
"Gee?" Gerard questioned.
"Sorry, I just called you that for some reason," I mumbled in embarrassment.
"No, it's alright, I actually like that," he reassured.
"Gee," I stated, the helium wearing off.
I started filling another balloon up as it got quiet again. Gerard let go of the balloon he was blowing up, making it fly around the room before landing back on his face. I giggled as he left it on there, looking at me.
"How do I look?" He asked.
"That look isn't for you," I said, stifling laughs.
"Damn, I was really sure about this one," he mumbled in mock disappointment. "Maybe I should dye my hair red. Can you imagine me with red hair? I'd probably look fucking stupid, kinda like a fire truck. I like my hair black, I don't think I'm gonna mess with it."
He took the balloon off, tossing it aside and going back to his job.
"He's here!" Pete yelled.
We all shut off the lights, hiding in any spot possible. Gerard and I ended up behind a chair in the corner. This is a horrible spot why would I come here? He was so close I could hear his heart pounding really fast. Or was that my own heart? Oh god, it got really hot in here, why is it so damn hot?
"Surprise!" Everyone yelled as Mikey opened the door.
"Surprise," I said, a few seconds out of sync with the others and lacking the same enthusiasm that I should probably have.
Mikey pretended to be surprised, even giving a small smile. The party started with just people talking and laughing. Granted, it wasn't some totally killer party seeing as their grandma was even here for it, not to mention all the other adults.
