The sun shone through the trees and glinted onto the forest floor. Many trees were charred and black as coal as the forest fire from the day before had spread rapidly. The Knights weren't too concerned at first and they thought it would stop Morgana from attacking them but in the end they knew that the fire wasn't stopping anytime soon so the dragon used his wings to blow out the flames. It took a lot of strength and time to do so but in the end the flames died down. The men had helped by throwing water from a nearby stream onto the fire as they knew the dragon needed to save his energy to help Merlin, but despite their efforts the dragon was more successful at extinguishing the flames.

Merlin was the first to wake. His eyes slowly fluttered open and he groaned as his body ached all over. He was surprised that he was awake. He could recall everything that had happened the night before so he couldn't understand why he wasn't dead yet. Maybe I am, he thought. His head still pounded and his back stung but that feeling was slowly disappearing. Then all the pain was gone in an instance! He got up and blinked a few times as his eyes adjusted to the light. He ran one hand through his dark hair and laughed slightly. He was happy! He breathed in the fresh air, allowed it to fill his lungs and then he smiled. Although he didn't know why he felt such joy, he decided that it was nothing to worry about and he should make the most of this new feeling of freedom. He felt free from responsibility, his destiny, everything and he wanted the feeling to last! He twirled around in a circle, staring at the tops of the trees. He felt like he was floating but he could feel the dirt beneath him. He saw the trees slowly sway in the breeze and that was when he realised he couldn't hear a thing. Am I deaf? He thought. He tapped his ears slightly but it made no difference. For some reason he wasn't too concerned. He continued to spin and wander around, enjoying this unusual feeling until something caught his eye and he turned around to see Morgana leaning against the tree and he wasn't afraid. She was wearing a long, beautiful red dress and her dark hair lay in ringlets around her shoulders. She smiled warmly at him and he smiled and waved back which made her giggle. He tilted his head to one side and admired how perfect she was.

Then something touched his shoulder and he spun around and saw Arthur. He had a worried expression on his face and his lips were moving but Merlin could hear nothing. His facial expression became more serious and then he turned to face his Knights. Merlin hadn't realised they were awake either. He smiled slightly and turned to look at Morgana again but she was gone. Merlin marched towards the trees to find her but he was stopped by Arthur who was once again trying to communicate to him. That's when Merlin felt a surge of pain run through his body and reality hit him. He heard a piercing shriek and immediately covered his ears and fell to his knees. He could feel Arthur's arm on his and when the shrieking finally stopped, he heard the worried voices of his friends. The pain in his back struck and he fell to the floor and went unconscious.
