"This is the best weekend ever!" Bethany shouted out the sliding door. Together Ria and I grabbed her and dragged her back into our hotel room. I slammed the door shut as Ria threw a giggling Bethany onto her bed.
"Go to sleep Bethany, you're drunk." Ria laughed.
"Bethany giggled and fell over, "But it's so early."
"She's such a cheap drunk." Ria and I chuckled. Just then a quiet knock interrupted us.
"Don't answer it!" Bethany whisper yelled. "It's a teacher who wants to get us in trouble! It's a kidn-"
"Roger?" Ria had answered the door to find Roger standing there. "What are you doing here?"
"Can I come in?"
Ria crossed her arms and sat into her hip. "Why should I let you in?"
"Just think about how much trouble we'll both be in if Coach Winter's opens his door. Then think about what they'll do if they find Private Plastered over there." Roger paused. "Now are you going to let me in?"
Ria opened the door wider and moved to the side to let Roger in. "Thank you."
Roger pushed his way in, meanwhile Bethany passed out face first on her bed. Roger took one look at her, shrugged and sat down next to her.
"Let's go to the beach. "
"What?" I finally broke my silence. "Now? Are you insane? None of us can drive right now."
"Oh I stopped drinking hours ago. I'm fine to drive." Roger tried to reassure me.
"What about Bethany? She's in no fit state to be moved, and we can't just leave her here." Ria interjected.
"I wanna go to the beach!" Bethany's muffled voice came from the bed.
"Bethany, you're three steps from falling on your face, we are not going to the beach." I said.
"I can, and I will." Bethany rolled over and stood up. She stumbled, then began swaying, holding on to me. Now we were both swaying.
"I don't know about this." Ria and I made eye contact.
"Ria. You've never seen the beach before. This is your only chance!"
I could see the gears spinning in her head. "I mean, we're already drunk. It can't get much worse than this. Zoey?" She asked me.
"Why not? Season's over, they can't do anything to us. Let's go."
Roger bent down and picked up Bethany bridal style. "Let's get going ladies." He began to walk out the door when he stopped and turned to look at me, "By the way, Tucker isn't invited."
I brushed past him saying, "Don't worry, I wasn't planning on inviting him."
We all walked out to the car and already inside was Brent and Nick. I walked up to the front seat and leaned in, "Excuse me, where do you think you're sitting?"
"In my seat." Brent replied, "Hop in the back Queen Bee, you aren't calling the shots tonight."
I opened the door and said, "Aw how cute. Now out. Or the whole cheerleading squad will find out exactly how you spend your friday nights; and you will never get laid again."
"Ouch, that's harsh Zoey." Brent unbuckled his seatbelt and climbed out of the car.
"This is me Brent. Do you expect anything else?" I replied hoping in where he was just sitting.
"Never in a million years Zo." Brent smiled back at me from the backseat.
Once we were all ready to go, Roger sat in the front and started driving. We sat in silence, listening only to the radio. After maybe 30 minutes of this Ria piped up from the backseat, "Roger, how much further?"
Roger replied, "I don't know maybe 10 minutes? Why?"
"Well, Bethany just passed out again, and I think she's going to throw up when she wakes up. So if you could try to make that 10 minutes into 5, we should be fine."
I chuckled to myself when I saw the look on Roger's face. He loves his car like it's his child. "Don't worry." I whispered, "Bethany won't wake up for a while."
"She better in hell not wake up. She pukes in this car, she cleans it up. I don't care how drunk or hungover she is." Roger gripped the wheel tightly.
"Calm down, she won't I promise. Just focus on getting us there." I replied.
"Keep a look out for Kitty Hawk signs."
"Roger, we're in Kitty Hawk. When did you stop drinking again?" I asked nervously.
"I meant, look for a Kitty Hawk beach access sign. My bad." Roger said. I looked at him suspiciously but turned out the window to look for a beach access. "Here." Roger said a minute later and pulled into a deserted parking lot.
"Zoey, help me with Bethany please?" Ria called up to me.
"Here, I'm sitting next to you let me help." Nick said and grabbed Bethany under her arms, "Let's go lay her down on the beach, we'll go ahead and find a spot."
Nick and Ria got out of the car and carried Bethany down to the beach access, and disappeared in between the dunes.
I walked around to the back of the car where Roger had gone after he parked. "Need help?" I asked.
"Yeah actually, grab some blankets? They're somewhere around here." Roger said.
I went to the backseat and found the pile of blankets, "Found them!" I called back to Roger.
"Great, let's go meet up with Brent and Ria." He came out from behind the car with a cooler in his hand. I smiled to myself and started down the beach access path.
"Wait. Does this mean you forgive me?" Roger rushed to ask.
I stopped in my tracks. I slowly turned to face Roger. I moved my hair and showed him my neck, "Do you see this scar? As long as I have this, I will never forgive you. Don't mistake tonight for an act of forgiveness. Because it isn't." I turned back towards the dunes and kept walking.
"Zoey, it's been almost six months. How can you throw away all the good times we had? I treated you like a princess Zoey."
"Roger, we are not doing this now. You had your chance 6 months ago while I was getting 50 stitches in my head." I kept walking, picking up the pace so Roger would drop the conversation.
"Zoey. Zoey! Listen to me, I'm sorry!"
"Too late." I spat back, I walked down the dunes and found Ria and Brent with a puking Bethany.
