A Wreck

After a few hours of skating the boys headed home. Mathias knew that Lukas was probably worn out, so he made sure to keep the music quiet on the radio and not to talk much so the Norwegian could sleep.

After a good five minutes in the car, Lukas had passed out. His legs sore from rollerblading and the shot had also worn him out. Usually he wouldn't do anything after his shot, so he wasn't used to being this tired.

The car ride was silent. Well, for a little bit.

As the car was heading for the intersection, a semi had passed. Now, intersections are always fast, so this happened fast. The driver of the semi lost control and hit one of the sound barriers, flipping over all four lanes. Seeing as every car in each lane was going well over 50, no one really had the time to stop.

Thankfully, most cars swerved out of the way.

Mathias was always cautious on interstates, so he wasn't going very fast. As soon as the wreck happened, he pulled the car over, parked in a ditch, and grabbed a bag out of the trunk.

Onlookers got out of their vehicles as Mathias tried to move through the crowd.

"Excuse me!" He yelled, pushing people out of the way. Car wrecks have always been serious for him ever since Fin and Sve died and he didn't want to see anyone not have to chance to live again.

"We need a doctor!" Someone yelled. Mathias sighed.

"Let me through!" He pushed people, finally nearing the wreckage. He grabbed his pager.

"Semi flip; interstate 750; several cars were involved; send ambulances and stretchers; at least three in wreck," the Dane said quickly into the pager before heading to the semi first.

This wasn't the first wreck he'd seen. He saw the driver's door was jammed shut and lying on the ground. He also noticed the windows were broken. Glass was never good in a time like this.

Mathias managed to see the whole roof had been torn off on impact and the driver was unconscious. "I need someone to help!" he yelled out, he needed someone to lift the driver out, while he kept the head stabilized.

After someone had come to help, he brought him to a car that wasn't in the wreck and set him on the hood.

"Hold his head like this," Mathias showed the man who had come to help. The man nodded and held his head, while Mathias rummaged in his bag, finding a stabilizer.

He quickly put it on him, "The ambulance will be here within minutes, tell them Mathias Køhler gave you the permission to inform them on the wreck. This is the semi driver, five flips, don't forget to tell them that."

The man nodded and Mathias ran back off to the car that had hit first. What he saw made tears come to his eyes.

There was, what looked like, a teenage girl with some friends. The driver looked twenty, the passenger looked seventeen, and the girl was maybe fourteen.

He quickly managed to get the three out. The girl in the back was fine, though she had whiplash and some cuts, the driver was the same as the girl, though she most likely had a concussion. The passenger was out of luck. He was unconscious.

And when Mathias checked his pulse, there was none.

The Dane took the two girls to his car.

"You can sit in here, just be quiet because he's asleep, I have to go and help, but the ambulances will be here soon, I'll see you again at the hospital." He said, running back.

The next vehicle he went to was a truck. The man in the front seat was unconscious. Mathias checked his pulse. There was one, though it was weak. He got the man out and stabilized his neck, setting him down, giving another the procedure to do with the first man.

Mathias went back to the car that had the two girls and drug the man out slowly.

He took him to a place where there was no glass and he stabalized his neck. He began CPR.

"1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8..." He kept going.

"29...30," then he began with mouth to mouth.

30 to 2; compressions to breaths.

Mathias wasn't giving up. He didn't want that poor girl to have the loss he had.

Both at a young age.

Mathias kept going, though, the man's lips became purple and his body cold to the touch.

The Dane grabbed his pager, "Four injured, youngest at 14 oldest at 32; estimated ages; two girls, two men; both men unconscious; girls are awake and well; one dead."

Mathias put his pager up and stared at the man. He felt so bad.

The Dane walked back to his car and sat in the front, turning around to talk to the girls.

"What was that man to you?" He asked quietly.

The elder girl looked at him, tears in her eyes, "He's my boyfriend."

The younger girl kept her head down, playing with her bloodied fingers, "He's my brother."

Mathias looked at them.

"I tried everything to save him, but God must have said it was his time to become an angel," he said softly, looking at the two.

The younger girl kept her head down. She had the same reaction Mathias had when he found out Sve was gone.

The older girl had Fin's reaction. She was sobbing loudly and had woken Lukas up.

He looked at Lukas and motioned for him to be quiet.

"I'm sorry girls. At least you have each other."

"We...we were about to go to a party...he was going to propose," the little girl said, causing the older one to cry harder.

Mathias got out and went to the side of the older girl, bending down by the open door.

"I'm sorry for your loss and I can compare somewhat to how you feel, but I compare more to her," he pointed to the little girl.

"When I was her age, I got into a car wreck with my two best friends, the oldest died on impact, the other died in the hospital," Mathias fought back tears, "They were literally my only family and it kills me to see this stuff."

"Then why are you a doctor?" The younger girl asked.

"Because I can help see people get better and save others from going through what I have."

The three chatted for a while before the ambulances came and took them off.

Mathias filed his report. Alfred had been one of the doctors in the ambulance.

"Bro, you've had a hectic day, huh?"

"Yeah and it was epic.." Mathias smiled brightly.

Alfred smirked, "I see you finally asked him out.

"Hell yeah!" Mathias smiled.

"Well you two go home, we have a transfer doctor coming to help, since you're too worn out," Alfred smiled, "Don't forget tomorrow's your day off!" He walked back to the ambulance.

Mathias got in the car. Lukas was gagging, his head out the window.

"Norge? You okay?" Mathias asked, concerned.

Lukas nodded, "The smell...it's horrid."

Mathias nodded, "Okay, well, we'll be home soon," he said and began to drive home again.

And just like before, Lukas fell asleep.
