Dawn was near.
Yet another day in this run down world.
The zombie apocalypse ruined everything.
It all started a year ago, when the first ever zombie rose and infected an innocent human. The zombie disease started to spread like wildfire, infecting everyone in sight. There were shelters built around schools but unfortunately not around houses. Hundreds, thousands, millions of families died, leaving helpless children on their own. The zombies soon roamed all over the world. All attempts of wiping them out failed. Armies tried, thought they succeeded, but all in vain. There would always be one more escapee zombie who went on to infect another innocent, defenseless civilian. People were told that everyone was safe to go out, continue their everyday activities, which they did. They were brainwashed to feel security and think that everything was alright. The safety they felt was just an illusion cast by the government, an attempt to keep hell from breaking loose.
But somehow it did. Hell broke loose.

There was a loud knock on Jan's door. Not waiting for a response, a nervous Eugenio hurried into the room. He hastily pulled Jan's old, tattered blanket off him and stuffed it into the boy's open bag. At least he spared the blanket, the only thing that kept poor Jan warm at night.
"Dude, wake up." Eugenio exclaimed, aggressively shaking Jan's shoulders. With that, the boy's eyes opened. He sat up, rapidly blinking at Eugenio.
"I expect an explanation-"
"W-we have to get out of here." The nervous fifteen year old stuttered, starting to pack Jan's stuff. Without saying anything more, Jan jumped out of bed. His jet black hair was messed up and his eyes were hardly open. He quickly jogged over to the little circular window and pulled up the blind just so he could be able to see what was going on outside. At least a dozen or so zombies were roaming around on their crops, either munching on the carrots or stomping over them, nearing the house. This sight was enough to fully wake him up and widen his eyes.
"Damn vegetarian zombies." Jan sighed, walking over to Eugenio. They hurriedly packed Jan's bags, Eugenio being already packed. In fact, he never did unpack, always ready to be on the move. It just happened to them that they didn't get attacked at all in this spot for the past three months. Now, just about when they were both able to sleep calmly in their beds without expecting to have their face eaten off by a zombie, they had to move out.
"Wait," A sudden thought rushed through Jan's head. "Why can't we just go out and fight them off?"
"Those are spitters, you dumb dumb." Eugenio nearly shouted, angrily throwing the already stuffed bag into Jan's arms. Yes, the spitters. The worst kind of zombies, their name coming from the fact that they spilled liters of highly acidic and corrosive goo out of their mouth as a form of attack and defense.
Of course the spitters would come to attack. Back when the two boys were looking for a spot, they stumbled across a shrine. It was all covered in slimy, yellow and green goo. The mysterious liquid stank like dead rats and feces, which made them cringe and cover their noses. Eugenio and Jan both felt like they were being watched when building this house and were, unfortunately, right. The spitters were always out, spying on the pair of friends. This was the spitter zombie territory. And the two boys invaded it. No bad intentions, just simply building a house would have set off the zombies to try and eat them. But Jan wondered why they would attack now. After all this time of them two living here, he'd thought the zombies either ignored them or would have forgotten about them.
"Ready?" Eugenio asked, ready to go into their main room. Jan quickly unhooked his coat from the hanger, putting it on. He slipped a pair of combat boots on, which were already standing next to the door. He slung the bag full of his belongings over his shoulder and picked up his two blades. Eugenio leaned on the door frame, skillfully spinning his rifle around. His backpack was already slung over his shoulders.
"Yup, ready." Jan replied, nodding towards the door. Eugenio raised his rifle up, ready to shoot if any zombies got into their kitchen. He swung the door open, bursting into the room and immediately scanning it. Luckily, no zombies got inside yet, which meant that the boys still had some time left.
"Pack some food." Eugenio suggested. Although he was a year younger than Jan, he was wiser. The two boys looked for bags around the kitchen, which all turned out to be neatly wrapped around in one place. Each boy had one bag. They both packed everything they could. Cans with different foods, some of Nicole's cooking that she gave to them as a gift, and Nat and Holly's baked goods such as chocolate chip cookies and shortbread cake. Their friends were really supportive and gave them goods when the two decided to separate to go on their own, which was great.
"How are we going to escape, though? We can't run away with this much bags no us!" Jan exclaimed, running around and picking up as much food as he could. He glanced around to look at Eugenio an waited for an answer.
"I contacted the rest through the radio. They should be here soon." Eugenio answered. Usually, he'd start to panic when stressed. He would make a stupid decision like going outside to fight the zombies himself, not considering the dangers and possibility of death. This time, he acted maturely and responsibly. The two needed help and Eugenio knew just who to call.
"They're coming in their new, armoured car, apparently." The fifteen year old added, brushing his hair out of his vision. He seriously needed a haircut. He missed every chance to get a haircut, or simply just dismissed the hair issue and carried on wit long hair.
A loud hissing noise, like something melting, came from behind the door of Jan's room. Both boys froze in their tracks. Yellow, stinking goo leaked into the kitchen from under the front door, beginning to melt everything it touched. The goo was slowly working it's way up the wooden door, burning it down and passing onto the walls. There was no way they could escape now.
"Where are they?" Jan asked in a panicked tone. He glanced everywhere, checking if there was anymore goo leaking through.
"They should be here by now-"
Honking cut through the night. The others were here. Still, Jan and Eugenio had to escape this trap. Jan's room was already melted down, leaving only one possibility. They exchanged looks and simultaneously darted for Eugenio's room. Jan slid over the table and Eugenio jumped over two stacks of wood that the two boys have collected over time, which was for creating much needed fire. The older boy pushed Eugenio's door open and, seeing as the room was clean of zombies and the corrosive liquid, he ran inside. Eugenio followed shortly after, taking a quick glance behind at his melting kitchen. They ran up to the window, which was already opened, probably because Eugenio forgot to close it before he fell asleep.
Firstly, Jan threw his bags out of the window, jumping out afterwards. Then followed Eugenio's bags and then Eugenio himself, who climbed out with great difficulty. The car was approaching them at really fast speed, same as the spitter zombies from just around the corner. Jan picked up his bags and ran, dragging Eugenio along with him. Eugenio could hardly keep up.
The fully armoured, clearly bulletproof car drove over to them, skidding as it came to a sudden halt. The back doors swung open and two hands stuck out. Without any hesitation or thorough thought, the two both took hold of the hands. They were hauled into the car along with their bags, the doors immediately closing behind them.
There was no time for getting comfortable nor buckling seat belts. The car made a sharp u-turn and sped away into the darkness of the night, leaving Jan's and Eugenio's house melting down behind them, and a bunch of brave zombies who tried to chase the car but fell over almost immediately.
