Pineapples? I opened my eyes slightly and blinked slowly as I drew in air to fill my lungs and expel it after a mere five seconds. The aroma of pineapples filled me through and through till I managed to open my eyes and come face to face with the ceiling of the Little White Church. Come to think of it, I was unsure why I thought that. I rarely look up enough to know that the ceiling even looks like that. So… I turned my head and caught sight of the familiar tapestry hanging and sighed at the confirmation. An inexplicable joy bubbled in me. The smile that possessed my lips wasn’t something I could ignore and I had to finish it with a chuckle. My hands flew to my face and rubbed my sleep laden eyes before I turned the opposite way to lay on my stomach, but someone blocked me. The sight of her white hair peeking from her cap made me stay still for a moment to determine whether she was awake or asleep. Minor rises and falls of her arms that crossed over her chest was a signal that she was asleep. My caught breath let out in a rush as a wad of spit filled my mouth. I swallowed it down with slight trouble.
Sitting up with little noise, I peered under the bill of her cap, gathering view of her face. She seemed at ease, shadows kissing the dips of her eyes while a rosy shade dappled her cheeks. My smile returned. Jordan looked like a toddler, curving her body for more warmth from the cold descending on us. That brought my attention back to where we were. I pulled out my phone to check the time but it was dead, so the darkness around us that had a pretty subtle haze from the last remaining beams of sunlight was the only watch I could guestimate the time on. The afternoon was dying out and giving way to the night. It was then that I felt the unmistakable surge of a headache. I had drank again and tried to balance it with eating but Candice got her boisterous moods on. However, it wasn’t as bad as last time. It kind of felt good. I felt loose.
“It’s ok.”
My attention snapped to Jordan, who raised her head a little to look at me. Her brown eyes poured in to mine and brought a sense of calm with them. I tilted my head and smiled, trying not to be hostile. YEAH RIGHT! I was trying not to go ga-ga over how cute she looked. Her cap hid the boyish cut of her hair but her face really showed she was a girl. Maybe it’s because I can see her chest now.
“hm?” I responded after all that thinking.
She untangled her arms and stretched rolling on to her back and yawning before going limp and looking at me again. She sighed and began to speak.
“My mom died when I was twelve. I was alone with her in the house and she dropped down in the shower. Stress was the cause and I guess I get it now. Living in an apartment with a child and no other support must have made her suffer a lot. But shockingly, my dad came to the mortuary she was taken to and took me immediately. I was angry at him for three years – upset that he couldn’t save my mom although she never spoke bad about him. She used to tell me things of this admirable man but I saw no proof till the fifth year. There was no love greater than my father’s and Kain’s. I tried to do a million things to make them hurt but,” she paused and looked at the ceiling.
Slowly, she raised her arms, revealing her cut ridden arms. She had scars that criss crossed and lined perfectly parallel.
“I hurt myself more in the process. I didn’t want to show anyone my pain and I didn’t have anyone else to blame. But my father walked me to the park in Amrouse Court and told me a story of how he and my mom met. It was such a beautiful story, but what was of interest was the truth. He wasn’t there and he knew it. He gave no support, no peace and no love for all those years and the only thing he sort to do to redeem himself was beg for my forgiveness.”
