"Did you hear about Jessie and Rhonda?"
"No. What about them?"
"Oh my gosh. You didn't hear? Where do you live under a rock? Talk of the school is that they hooked up last Friday at Ryan's party."
"Eww. That whore."
"I know right and she knew that Jessie is Mya's--"
Having enough of the conversation, I stood up and coughed loudly gaining everyone's attention. The two gossip girls of the school rolled their eyes at my interruption. But, I could care less. My class, my rules.
Standing up, I grabbed my phone and glanced at the time.
2:45
30 more minutes to go. Licking my lips, I tossed the phone back on the desk with a sigh. I crossed my fingers and examined the whole class. Finding my target I spoke, "Chelsea, care to come up to the front and read your essay?"
Chelsea eyes widen at my suggestion and she looked around embarrassed at being called upon. I exhaled loudly to show my impatience. I don't have all day. I don't want to be here. I just want to finish this class, go home and sleep. Chelsea fiddled with her mechanical pencil and bit her lip, debating whether or not to come up to the front I assume.
Rolling my eyes for the thousandth time today, I walked down the aisle and passed the other students desk and pulled out a pen from my pocket. Bending down, I wrote a big F and circled it on her paper. She gasp, staring at the red letter. "Next time stop gossiping and do your work." I clicked my pen and stuffed It back in my pocket while walking back to the front of the class.
Smirking, I asked a question knowing I wouldn't get any replies. "Any volunteers to read their essay that was supposed to be done last night, but being the kind lad I am, I let you work on it in class but what a terrible idea that was. Seeing most of you think this is associating time. So, any volunteers?" The room was dead silent. No one spoke.
So, nobody wants to volunteer. I'll fix this. "Well then, pass your papers to the front and I'll collect them." Everyone quickly passed their papers to the front, not having no clue what I was about to do. I collected all the papers from each row and sat in my chair behind my desk. I pulled my red ink pen out and looked up to see the whole class staring at me with curious eyes. I gave everyone a small smile and picked up the first paper that was on top.
"Since no one wants to read their essay, then I'll do it for you all." Clearing my throat, I began reading the paper.
"Paper written by, Johnathan Tucker. I think schools should allow all kids to be off campus for 45 minutes. It's not fair that we only get 30 minutes. I want to be able to--"
I paused and closed my eyes sighing. These kids write like they're still in middle school. The cons of being a teacher. I looked at Johnathan's flustered face and shook my head. "Seriously Johnathan? Now I see why you didn't volunteer. This is trash." I exclaimed, writing a big fat F on the paper. Harsh? Maybe but oh well I'm tired of repeating myself and I'm not even in a good mood.
I cracked my knuckles and began my rant. "At the beginning of the year I told you guys that never ever, ever are you suppose to write a essay in first person or second person. Also never begin your argument stating your claim as the first sentence. Well, my mistake. You can. But, it doesn't make the reader want more. It doesn't provide that spark of interest that every paper needs. Sorry to say but, you guys won't be able to pass my class writing essays like this." I picked up the stack of papers and glance through them and seen most of them with a few sentences on each paper that looked like chicken scratch.
