Laurence
I sighed as Kier snuggled up to me. He didn’t know how I felt and how the little things he did, even in his sleep, affected me. I sighed again and turned onto my side staring out the window. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, but with Kier making adorable little mewling noises behind me I couldn’t. I threw the covers off my body and then as silently as I could left the room.
Kier
I shivered in my sleep and reached out a hand towards Laurence. I opened my eyes when I felt an empty space. The mattress was still slightly warm telling it hadn’t been empty long. I sat up and looked around. It was still dark outside. I slid out of bed and padded across the room. The bathroom door was shut and no light was emerging from under the door. I frowned. I walked down the hallway, and turned into the living room. The lamp in the corner was on and its soft glow illuminated Laurence sat in the centre of the couch leaning on his knees with his head in his hands.

I felt the presence of somebody as they sat next to me. I didn’t have to look to know who it was. “What are you doing up Kier?” I asked. “I think I should be asking that Bevers” he replied as he placed his head on my shoulder. His hair tickled my neck and cheek. “What’s up Laur?” he asked. I sighed deeply and lifted my head “Nothings up I just couldn’t sleep.” I told him honestly. “Laurence, I’ve been your best friend since we were nine, please don’t lie to me.” I rested my head on top of his “Kier, honestly I’ve just been lying awake, staring at the ceiling thinking, I’m alright” I lied. “Okay, I don’t believe you but promise me that if you ever need to talk to someone you’ll find me.” I nodded. “I promise.” He lifted his hand and pointed his pinkie. “Pinkie promise?” I looped my pinkie around his. “Pinkie promise.”

I was sat with my head on his shoulder, my littlest finger twined around his littlest finger. I felt safe and warm. I could feel my eyelids getting heavier and my breathing getting deeper. I’ve found that I can’t sleep without Laurence beside me. I found out this little nugget of information the first time we toured when we were in the van and he was driving. I would lie awake until we stopped and we swapped drivers.

“Right Kemp, back to bed” I said lifting my head it was then that I realised he’d fallen asleep still holding my finger. I studied his face, like I did most nights, locking away in my memories the way his eyes moved behind his lids, how occasionally his nose would twitch and how he sometimes smiled in his sleep. I carefully lifted his head moving him so he was lying on the couch for a moment whilst I stood up turned off the lamp. I made my way back to him and gently picked him up and carried him back through to the bedroom. I pulled back the quilt and placed him on the bed. I climbed in beside him and dragged the covers back over us both. I was just drifting off when I felt him move closer to me and I wrapped my arms around him. Holding him close to me I let the darkness take over and fell into a dreamless sleep.
