Chapter 4

I pounded on my alarm clock to get it to stop beeping. I wanted to snuggle back under the covers but checking the time, I realized I had already slept in too late. I sat up quickly, making my head spin. I groaned, kicking the covers back.

I made my way to the shower, catching sight of myself in the mirror along the way. My jean jacket indeed had throw up on it from Tally. My maxie dress  was a wrinkled mess. I probably shouldn't have slept in them. The mess on top of my head I called my hair, had many knots in it. I winced just thinking about the hair I was probably going to pull out when I ran a brush through it. My eyes had bags under them and makeup was smeared across my face.

I started the shower, waiting until I could see steam rising from the top before hopping in. I yelped when the water made contact with my skin. It was far too hot. My body slowly adjusted to the temperature and I let the water run down my back, soothing my tensed muscles. I let out a sigh. I loved taking showers. They made you feel so clean and new again. They seemed to wash all of your impurities away, leaving only the raw innocence.

I hopped out of the shower, pulling on my light pink skinny jeans and white blouse. I blow-dried my hair and added a touch of curls to my honey blond hair that fell to the small of my back. I loved how long it had gotten recently. As I grabbed my purse, I made sure my mom and dad had already left for work before leaving. I wished my little brother, Preston, were there. I normally took him to school every morning.

I stopped at my favorite coffee shop as I normally did. Betsy greeted my with a big hug before getting back to work. She always complained on how they were low staff. I told her I would work here if I could, but I had to focus on schoolwork and Preston right then. She always said she understood as she was the oldest of four in her family. Betsy gave me the regular as I sat down at the bar.

Glancing around, I picked up another coffee newspaper, but it was still yesterday's horoscope. Sadly, this week's horoscope had only left me feeling more confused. Realizing I should probably hurry off to school, I grabbed my muffin to go and chugged the rest of my coffee. It burned going down my throat, but I didn't like to waste it. I mean, you always get the guilt trip about starving children in Africa and all that stuff if you do. Maybe nobody in here would guilt trip me, but I didn't like taking my chances. I was a sucker for that kind of stuff.

So, as I walked down the street towards school, some idiots passed me by in a brand spankin' new Jeep Wrangler. They were hollering and singing some song I'd never heard before. Hmm, I kind of liked it. But they were already closer to school than I was so I had no way of asking them.

Speaking of cars on their way to school, I could drive my own if I had a car because I had just received my restricted. And yet, here I was walking to school. Thanks mom and dad for not letting me use the perfectly good car that sits in our driveway. But whatever. I'm a big girl and big girls are more than capable of walking a couple of miles.

As I FINALLY made it to school, I noticed a familiar person perched on the steps in black leather boots.

"Hey Ashton! I was thinking after school we could go to the mall and stop at Forever 21, because i saw this really cute..."

"I can't today, Tals," I grabbed her hand and helped her up as we made our way inside.

"C'mon Ashton! What is it this time?" She made it sound like we never hung out, which definitely wasn't true. I just couldn't be there for her every beck and call like she thought I should be.

"I told you. I have to take my little brother to his soccer practice today."

"This is so stupid! The soccer fields like five minutes away from his school. Why won't your parents just let him walk?"
