Chapter Nine

We stepped out of the elevator gripping each other's hands. With shaky steps I walked closer to the doorman that awaited outside the penthouse.

"Are you Miss Erickson?" The elderly doorman asked.

His silver hair was swept back, wrinkles lined his eyes, and his black with gold trim uniform creased.

I cleared my throat, "That's me."

"Mr. Garret has been expecting you. Please go on in." The man gave a gentle smile.

"Mr. Garret?" Frowning.

I didn't know he would be here also.

"Yes Miss." He smiled kindly.

I nodded acknowledging him, taking a deep breathe before walking through the now opened doors.

"Were right here." Justin whispered in my ear, reassuring me.

Kat smiled a small smile to encourage me. I could still see the traumatic effect the closed space caused her but she covered it well enough Justin didn't seem to notice. Entering the room I was faced with hundreds of people. They all had their eyes glued on me, Kat, and Justin.

"Grandma grandma!" My granddaughter hopped up and down.

"Yes my little one?" I looked up from knitting.

"What was wrong with meow meow?" My grandson asked.

Ever since my first child had heard me many times say Kat they all had got confused and would meow at her. It started out cute and Kat adored it but as I had more children, and they got older it wasn't cute to her anymore.

"Meow meow didn't like how small the elevator was with two other people in it." I explained.

Much to my dear best friends annoyance the name stuck with all my grandchildren. Now she just chooses to accept that she will forever be remembered as meow meow.

"Mama." One of children walked into our home.

"Yes darling?"

"Are you telling your stories again?" My daughter smiled, removing her coat.

"They begged to hear me tell the tale of the woman," I stood up to greet her, limping over. "Much like you and your siblings were."

"I hope your keeping it completely child proof." She laughed but I knew my darling daughter was serious.

"Yes." I rolled my eyes, swatting at my grey hair. "I left out the things they don't need to know, I replayed it in my head."

"Children why don't you all go outside and play while I talk to grandma." My daughter told my grandchildren.

They pouted but ran outside after putting their shoes on.

"Don't forget your coats!" I yelled as I walked slowly back into the kitchen.

"Let's hear it then mama." My daughter said.

"Hear what my darling?" I asked.

"The rest of the story." She smiled softly.

"You know the story my darling daughter." I shook my head, getting back to running hot water to finish my dishes.

"Yes but like you said, I begged to hear you talk. Plus," she planted her rump in the kitchen table chair. "I do love your stories."

I giggled lowly, "Alright alright."

"Pick up where you left off." She suggested.

I nodded then began to give a explanation of what was happening at the small hotel room.

"Lyrical?" A man with reddened eyes walked up to Kat.

"Wrong girl." Kat frowned showing her dislike towards him.

He apologized looking at me and sniffing, "You must be Lyrical then?"

"Yes." My voice cracked.

His hair was a dirty blonde color, barely touching the top of his ears. His eyes a mix of blue and green, reminding me of the clouded ocean. The skin on his face was a rough looking texture and ragged.

"My names Ashton." He held out a hand for me to softly shake.

"Nice to meet you." I nibbled on my bottom lip out of habit when I'm nervous.

I looked around to see if I could find Mr. Garret somewhere near.

"My uncle sure has an eye for talent." He spoke as if he didn't mean to say it out loud.

"Excuse me?" Kat asked, getting protective over me.

"My uncle sent you here to meet with me." Ashton explained, cleaning his throat harshly.

"Mr. Garret is your uncle?" I blinked.

He laughed, "My father is the old bats brother. Mr. Garret is just Mitch to me. I must say he has a hell of an eye for," his eyes rake over my body "talent."

I don't think he was referring to my talent since he hasn't heard me sing.

Justin stiffened to my left, "Well he is a talent scot."

Tension build between the four of us, I being very uncomfortable with the situation.

"Yes yes." Ashton sniffed, "Lyrical why don't you come chat with me."

Ashton gripped my arm with small force. I froze from the sudden contact and the small pain he caused. Justin pulled me to his side, making Ashton loose his grip on my arm.

"Why don't we go chat somewhere their isn't eyes watching." Kat snapped.

"Of course." His eyes narrowed at her but politely answered. "Follow me."

"Hey Ash!" A guy staggered towards us.

Ashton sighed annoyed "Not now Darren."

Darren shrugged, "I'll tell Isaac you're busy."

"Tell him to give me an hour and we'll have the lines cleared off. Do tell him if he takes it all, he will be on the blacklist. " Ashton growled.

Darren nodded before staggering off in the direction he came. He looked extremely intoxicated.

"What was that guy talking about?" Kat asked frowning.

I don't think she should have asked him that.

"Business." Ashton said but the one word he spoke held so much deceiving and untruthfulness it was unnerving.

"Of course." Kat spoke through gritted teeth.

We followed Ashton through the crowd and down a hallway with cream colored walls. Coming to a simple but fancy dark brown door, Ashton opened it.

"Step in." He gestured a hand inside.
