Jamie straightened their blazer jacket and tightened their tie, feeling nervous even though they knew they would win this case. They sat down and kept on reminding themselves not to look to their right, to not look at Sarah in her orange prison uniform. Because then they would feel guilty and might do something stupid like lose the case. The Judge entered and they stood up, but not before catching Sarah's eye and seeing the fear in her eyes, but also the anger. Anger at being convicted for a crime she didn't commit for being betrayed. Jamie tried to get rid of that image from their mind as the case began.
Jamie left the court house feeling happy with themselves, the jury was out making a decision and they were proud of themselves. They had one with case easily. Only a few witnesses had been called forward and Jamie was please with the answers. A tech expert confirmed that Sarah's internet history stated no knew activity on the computer for the hour where Emma was killed and judging from the saving times minimal work was made on the script during said time either.
But Jamie couldn't bring themselves to be completely happy, Anna's involvement bothered her, along with the fact that Sarah didn't look completely scared like most subjects who have been convicted of murder, no she seemed angry. She also looked shocked when the computer expert had reported no activity on the internet. It didn't help that Anna had recommended the expert herself. They found a corridor by a security camera and not near any windows before calling Anna.
The phone rang before going to voicemail
"Call later, when I've finished having sex with Saul Taylor!" Anna's voice said, and Jamie sighed before waiting for a few minutes and calling again. This time Anna picked up,
"Hey Anna, I need to ask you some questions about the Sarah case, and don't get Xorsheed to shoot me, I'm by a CCTV camera in a crowd of people."
"Wow, slow down, I'm recovering with sex with the brilliant Saul Taylor"
"Will you never shut up about him, this was funny when we were at school, but not now."
"I wasn't being funny, I was telling the truth. Say hi, Mr. Taylor"
"Hey" said a tired and deep voice.
"Right! Okay, back to the point. Why do you care about the Sarah case. She was going to get convicted easily, you didn't have to interfere. Unless you had something to hide, so what is it, Anna? What are you hiding that you would willingly send a friend to jail"
"A Friend! Sarah is no ones friend, she is evil and deserves to go to jail for murder, even if it isn't her sisters murder." Anna said, barely concealing the anger in her voice.
"So you admit that Sarah didn't kill Emma"
"Maybe, if you tell this to anyone I'll make sure that a bullet goes through your head the moment you walk outside."
"Nice talking to you too" and with that Jamie hung up, unsure of what to do. They knew they couldn't report it, I mean they could, but they didn't want to die. Call them selfish. They were still wondering what to do when they were told the jury had made their decision. They entered the court with their mind still full of questions. This time it was even harder not to look at Sarah and when they did they saw once again the anger at this injustice. The judge walked in and talked to one of the Jurors before announcing to the court the sentence.
"The court has sentenced Sarah Louise Cosgrove to death for killing her sister"
There was silence in the court and Jamie was confused about the death part, this wasn't America, the death penalty didn't exist. They watched in horror as Sarah was pulled away and Jamie realised they had killed Sarah. They had killed their best friend for a crime she didn't commit.
Jamie waited until the Judge had left before storming out of the room and calling Anna, again.
"Anna, give me your address so I can kill you, you motherfucking bitch."
"What did I do? You can't just call me and shout at me without telling me what you're shouting about"
"The death penalty, you brought back the fucking death penalty to kill Sarah. To kill my friend, you made me kill my friend and I will never forgive you for this, ever." Jamie said, their voice cracking.
"That wasn't me, check the news. It was done legitimately by vote. Goodbye, and I won't forget that you shouted at me. You know what Xorsheed can do, so show me respect."
"Oh shoot me, don't you see I don't give a flying fuck. Sure, I thought I did, but now- now life has got so goddamn hard and the only reason I have to live is to avenge Sarah's death."
