Sarah made sure that she was alone in the lab before locking the door and pulling down and securing all of the blinds. She took a deep breath and took the box of matches out of her lab coat pocket then took out one match stick. She still couldn't believe what had happened in the last hour alone. The lab report on Emma's body had come through and then everything had seemed like a dream. Or like the world has been shaken violently like a snow globe. She'd seen the connection quickly, years of training had made it easy. Next to Sarah's house was a pharmacy and they had recently had a large delivery of sleeping pills. The boxes had gone missing around the same time Sarah had reported she had gone for a walk. She hated the thought but it seemed certain the Sarah Cosgrove had killed her sister.
She'd acted quickly since realising this, knocking over a test tube of acid and therefore making everyone leave early. That led her up to here. She had the report in one hand and a match in the other, all she needed to do was light it up. Yet something was stopping her, a voice in the back of her mind saying that maybe she didn't know Sarah that well, and it had been years since they had even talked. Maybe she was capable of murder, but then again the Sarah she knew, or at least had known wouldn't kill anyone. Sure she would talk about killing someone and she fought with Jamie but she wouldn't actually go and do it, would she? Of course she wouldn't, that wasn't her.
She had decided and was just about to light the match when her cell rung.
"Asshole, I'm going to be there in about a minute, thought you should get a heads up. I need to see the results so I hope you have them handy."
Sarah was about to reply but Jamie had already hung up. The door opened and she stuffed the matches back in her pocket. Jamie snatched the results out of her hand and started to smile as she skimmed the page.
"Perfect!"
"Perfect? Perfect, your friend is going to go to jail for life and it's a good thing?"
"That's were your wrong. I'm not sending my friend to jail, I'm sending the primary suspect of a murder to jail."
"They're the same person-"
"I'm just doing my job, what are you doing Sarah."
"Something I'm probably going to regret for life." Sarah said before sighing, snatching the results out of Jamie's hands and taking out the box of matches. Jamie looked shocked and then nervous.
"Sarah, don't do this." They said trying to get close enough to grab the results but with every step forward they took Sarah took a step backwards.
"This is your job you're talking about."
"Yes, I know but unlike you I care more about my friends then my profession"
"You 'friend', you haven't talked for years, you barely know her. And this isn't just your career this is your reputation and my career. You see, I do actually care about my friends, the ones I actually know. If you do this I'm not going to report you, so understand that you're holding my career in your hands as well."
"No, I'm not your holding your career in your hands I'm holding some paper and a box of matches. Decide what you want to do, but don't use your decision to guilt me into doing what you want me to do." With that she struck the match and watched it burn. "Go if your going to go, stop me if your going to stop me, choose whatever the fuck you want to do with your life, but this is my life and my choice." With that she set the paper on fire and watched it burn, seconds later the door slammed shut and she was alone.
