onyx p.o.v.
"You know I think gardeners are going to be a bit upset that you did all they're work plus I think it would help if you had gloves and extra hands" whipping my head toward the garden entrance I take in the thought that he is standing less than 15 feet away, watching me with curiosity. Dipping my head in his direction I stand up hands folded and head bowed; the perfect slave posture. "Please don't do that" raising my head slightly I gave him a questioning look "the whole head bowed respect thing is ... weird" he continued. Respecting his wishes I gathered up the debris from my gardening session. He tossed it into the disposable bins, quirking a brow I stood a little shocked, vampires never do commoners work "a little hard work never hurt anyone, plus I figured when I said you had a free day you would be lounging about and not" gazing he finished the thought with a hint of amusement glittering in his eyes "gardening".
Heading back inside I quickly glanced at the time it was already 7 till eight. Vampire sleeping patterns worked differently than humans, their hours are from three in the afternoon till about four in the early morning. Odd but I was used to it by now so the change wasn't as significant as it was before. But ever since two months ago, my dreams have been plagued by nightmares, well memories really but they definitely weren't pleasant. They had started the same night that I got the six, half inch cuts that now adorned my back like a curse that I wished to not relive.
Finding small insignificant things to do around the house wasn't too hard since I had yet to run into a maid. So when Zee found me scrubbing the red wood floors she wasn't too surprised then, simply implied dinner was ready. Placing me at the end of the table zee shot me a look and changed my seat to sit across from Jace. And for thirty minutes I unintentionally threw out the mental slave book of "do's and don'ts" and ate like there was no tomorrow. Meeting the very amused faces of the pair I realized I had completely embarrassed myself, and would possibly be punished. Breaking the silence Jace bellowed out into a laugh "Damn zee what did you put in the food?" slapping his arm playfully she glared at him through her wide smile "oh hush child, you're the one that confused the hell out of da girl when you told her she had a free day".
Watching them banter back and forth a small smile crept its way on my face, till finally Zee flicked a pea at him and it hit him directly on the forehead, and I broke out in laughter. Swiveling their head in my direction they stared at me wide eyed, and it hit me like ton of bricks. I had laughed, the first real laugh I had in at least 4 years, smiling widely I excused myself to my room. Staring at the ceiling I reviewed the day, I couldn't quite grasp the fact that being here as a new ward was actually pleasant I could tell Jace wasn't like the other vampires. He wasn't cruel he was actually, well pleasant and understanding and, Zee was motherly, it kind of felt nice to be cared for. I could get used to it I suppose, but not without pulling my own weight around here, so he didn't think I was taking advantage of him and I wasn't a bad investment.
Waking up to the afternoons sun glint through my window and dance across my coverlet, I yawned. Sitting at the breakfast bar Zee handed me a mug of coffee and biscotti, making small talk here and there. Exploring the rest of the house I soon found myself surrounded with a large variety of books, I assumed it to be the library. Soon enough I found myself pulling out an old dusty children's book, blowing the dust off I realized it wasn't as great idea as I thought. Then I launched into a sneezing fit, swatting the dust polluted air around me as if it would actually help. Finally when my nose finally quit its sneezing tirade, and I was able to actually look at the book without watery eyes, it was the story of Hansel and Gretel. Flipping through the yellowed pages the story seemed more detailed than what I remembered, checking the date it read "March 14th, 1845", and this was probably the original story instead of the revised one I remembered, hell it was probably the first book they published it sure looked old enough to be, if the book was anything to go by then Jace was pretty old, though he didn't show it.
Rubbing his temples Jace sighed; hesitantly I entered his office, leaning back he visibly relaxed then regarded me "free day... again?" Shrugging my shoulders I plopped myself down in the dark suede covered love seat across from him, and set up the marble game set. Raising his eyebrows he smirked a little "you play?" nodding my head we diverged into a vigorous and fast paced game of chess. Dropping his head into his hands he laughed a little "in all the years I've been playing chess I can't believe you've out smarted me-". Ringing a musical tune his phone vibrated, breaking his sentence short, he answered it. Stowing the game away I took a peek at him, his back was to me, he looked visibly irritated by whoever he was talking to "no I thought we had a deal, mother I said no-" being cut off by a little voice talking from the phone, I slipped out to give him privacy".
He was talking to his mother? Pushing the thought away I made use of myself with miscellaneous house work such as; taking out the trash, dusting bookshelves and pictures, by the time Jace found me I was polishing the silverware "amazing I hired people to do the house work and grounds yet you still find something to do" nodding my head he just grinned, bustling past Jace, Zee snatched up all the silverware. Sighing she scolded me "no more house work" swatting Jace on the arm she set her sights on him "I oughta beat you child, keepin this girl in this house and not showing her the outdoors, now go on and show her" grinning guiltily she shooed us away.
Staying true to Zee's warning he did show me outside, even to the stalls where he kept a few horses, helping me up onto a horse we wandered into the forest, timid at first and then more naturally. Surprisingly I enjoyed myself, to fill the silence he made small talk and a few jokes, all in which I found myself smiling and shaking my head to.
Staring at the ceiling as I settled in for the night, my thoughts surfaced from the day. It wasn't bad here, more homey if anything, and I actually liked it, it felt like I wasn't a slave but more of a normal human enjoying my day, instead of being trapped in a single place and forced to do tedious tasks repeatedly and looked down upon. Things were turning around and maybe for the better. Yawning I closed my eyes and drifted into a dreamless sleep.
