Unexpected Love

Chapter 9

"So...." I say as I stir the straw in my cup, making the ice swirl around. "What made you audition? I mean, you really don't seem like the type of person to...." I realize how judgmental I sound and trail off embarrassed.

But Duncan just laughs. "The type of person to audition for a school play? You're right actually. I got dragged in on it by my girlfriend Heather."

I try not to scrunch up my face too much at the sound of her name but I must be doing horribly because Duncan laughs and raises an eyebrow. "What?"

"She's really not that fond of me. She hasn't been since that first day in the cafeteria and me getting Sandy did not help. I'm convinced she wants to run me over."

Duncan smiles and rolls his eyes. He has a gorgeous bright smile that seems to make his crystal blue eyes light up every time. "So what about you? Are you one of those drama kids?"

I nod shyly. "The school I came from was a performing arts. I actually didn't want the lead though. I wanted Rizzo."

He leans in close and presses his elbows on the table. "Well. I'm glad you got picked to play Sandy...."

"Why?" I ask, grinning. He leans in super close to my face. His breath is minty fresh. "Because. This means I get to kiss you."

I feel my cheeks heat up and I know they're red. I feel like I should come up with something sassy and cute to say but nothing pops in my mind. Damn. Instead I change the subject slightly. "Alright. I don't know if I feel comfortable kissing a complete stranger. Why don't you tell me about yourself?" I sip on my Coke like I haven't had a drink in centuries.

"Well. I'm Duncan Mariano and I'm 18. I love horror movies and punk rock music. I died my hair green for a halloween costume and kept it ever since. I have 4 tattoos and more piercings than I can count sometimes. My parents are both cops, which is ironic because during my sophomore year I got arrested at least 5 times. I'm allergic to shellfish and I think you're extremely attractive."

My whole face feels on fire; this guy is one charming son of a bitch. "So what about you? A girl as beautiful as you is bound to have an interesting story.."

I pick at the ends of my hair awkwardly. "Well, my name is Courtney Breanne Manns and I'm 17 years old. I was born and raised in New York until....now. I have a 3-year old brother named Liam. I live with my annoying-as-hell cousin Katie and I think the guy across from me is really cute."

The words just tumble out of my mouth and I am relieved to see that instead of being uncomfortable, he seems satisfied.

A hand slowly grazes my knee and I watch him bite his lip. My insides melt. This is so wrong. But it seemed like God agreed with me because at that moment, Duncan's phone rang. He opened it.

He reads over the text and consequently rolls his eyes. "My mom let the dog get out the house again. Which means I get to ride on my motorcycle around the whole neighborhood shouting his name."

He stands up; but not before paying for both our drinks. "This was fun. Wish my mother could understand the concepts of closing and locking doors so that this could go on for longer but....."

I stands up too. "Yea...it was cool."

"I'll see you tomorrow. Maybe we can work something out." He turns and leaves, but not before turning around and giving me one last smirk.

Damn. If I made it out of the end of this shit without completely falling for Duncan, then I will completely devout myself to going to church everyday!
