Lilly's POV;
I walked home quickly, ducking underneath low tree branches. Alli whined about wanting to run, but we both knew that couldn't happen. We tried so many times before and failed that now we don't even try. 'She doesn't love us!' Alli sniffled, whining quietly. 'She might.' I thought, letting out a sharp yelp when a tree branch smacked into my face. Alli snorted and started laughing. 'Smooth Lilly, smooth.' I huffed and rolled my eyes, rubbing my forehead in annoyance.
"Lilly?" My head snapped up at the sound of my name being called and Alli did too. 'Mate?! That's her voice!' Alli yelped excitedly. I frowned and looked around, not believing what Alli said.
"Lilly!" The voice was closer now and I finally saw her blue hair emerge from the trees. She looked around for a second before our eyes met. I immediately ducked my head and stared at the ground. It wasn't something that I could help, I wasn't supposed to look anyone in the eye. It was disrespectful.
"Lilly?" She said softly, her voice slow and careful. I both loved it and hated it.
"Please look at me." She whispered.
I sighed quietly and looked up, looking at her again. I was surprised to see that it looked like she had been crying. Her pale skin was puffed up and swollen around her eyes, and her makeup was smudged slightly. She was closer now, enough to where we could touch each other, if we reached out.
"I-I didn't mean to yell," she mumbled. "i just didn't know how to feel, I mean, I was raised hearing all of the stories of the girl falling in love with her mate, the handsome boy." I so desperately wanted to believe her, and not because she was mate, because I wanted to believe that someone actually wanted to help me, to get to know me.
I hesitantly stepped forward, and she still didn't move. After looking at each other for what seemed like forever, I took a deep breath and hugged her.
Willows POV;
I ran through the forest, school had gotten out finally, and I had to find Lilly. I felt so terrible, just because I had grown up to stories about girls and boys falling in love and being mates doesn't mean girls can't be happy. Kita refused to talk to me until I apologized, so there would be no shifting for me. "Lilly?" I shouted, ducking underneath branches. I realized that I had started crying, and wiped underneath my eyes in surprise. I usually never cried, although I guess that's what mates do to you. I sniffled a little and wiped at my eyes quickly.
"Lilly!" I shouted triumphantly, bursting out of the trees when I spotted a small flash of white that belonged to her hair. Our eyes met for a second before she looked back down hurriedly. Oh, right.... She was the omega, she's not allowed to look people in the eye. Just thinking about that made me want to punch my dad in the face. God, how could he have done that to her!
"Lilly?" I said quietly, taking a small step forward. I didn't want to scare her, and I wanted her to know that I wouldn't hurt her.
"Please look at me." I begged, actually considering getting on my knees at this point. The guilt was like a pound of lead in my heart. I saw her tense up, but I took the time to really look at her. Her hair was really white, not dyed. She had long fingernails, and long fingers. She was tall, but I was taller, something that I prided myself on. I noticed a small scar on her right hand, and I remembered that it was from trying to fight back. I frowned and watched her silently.
She looked up slowly, and when our eyes met I had to admit it felt right. Her eyes were beautiful, a light gray, but when you were this close, close enough to touch.... They had spots of green and gold.
"I-I didn't mean to yell," I whispered "i just didn't know how to feel, I mean, I was raised hearing all of the stories of the girl falling in love with her mate, the handsome boy." I finished, looking at her. I could feel my eyes well up with tears when she didn't do anything but I stood still and blinked them away. She took a small step forward, and I stood still. It felt like I was trying to get a deer to eat out of my hand. If I moved, I'd scare it away.
She moved quickly, but instead of her running away like I though she would, I felt her hug me tightly. I stiffened for a second but then I hugged her back.
"I'm so sorry" I whispered, crying again. She pulled away, and I noticed that she was crying too.
"Don't cry!" I said, wiping at my own tears quickly. She laughed a little bit and I looked at her in shock, that was the first noise I'd ever heard from her. Except for small noises of annoyance, anger, and so on. She sniffled a little bit and wiped at her eyes.
"It's alright, I promise" I whispered, grabbing her hand slowly. She didn't flinch away, and instead squeezed my hand gently.
