Lillys POV:

The laughter carried on the wind and I quickened my pace. I was normally pretty good at distinguishing different voices but laughter was hard. I could hear more voices get louder as I got closer and closer to the school. My stomach churned and I soothed myself the best I could by counting to six over and over in my head. I could hear someone unshifting in the forest near the school and sure enough a tall boy came slouching out of the woods not long after. I'd seen him around school before, it was definitely hard not to anyway. He was pretty tall, I'd guess maybe 5'10", maybe a little taller. He also had red hair and slouched all the time, so it was pretty easy to spot him in the hallways during school. Shifters weren't allowed to be all wolfed out around the school, it was dangerous for the non-shifters. It was allowed if school was out but only if you were just passing by and had to take that route or something, otherwise you could get in trouble. The school was a weird mix of the packs around in the area which led to a lot of weird fights and superiority complexes, mostly every pack thought they were better than the others when in reality we were all pretty evenly matched. He was dragging his backpack around his ankle and I squinted in confusion until it clicked that he must've had it tied around his wolf forms foot to carry it easily. He kicked his leg up and launched the backpack up and caught it in one swoop before continuing to walk like nothing had happened.

I decided to sit outside for just a little while until the bell rang, I normally liked to be in class as early as possible because the possibility of being late was terrifying to me, but I also wanted to see if I could spot Willow. It was weird not being able to shift but still being a shifter, I could hear better than a normal human. Same with sight, smell, whatever a human has shifters usually have it better. No one knew why I couldn't shift, some just couldn't and they usually stayed that way. I couldn't help but hold out hope that maybe one day I really could, especially when my dad was a pretty talented shifter. Just thinking about my dad made me clench my jaw and dampen my mood a little. However the gods seem to have smiled down on my today because there in the distance I could see and hear willow.

She was walking with Alex who was making large animated gestures next to her and making gibberish noises. I could see her laugh and shove at her which made a small pit of jealousy pool up in my stomach but I quickly shoved it down. She's allowed to have friends, we're not being that type of mate. Before I knew what I was even fully doing my hand was up in the air and I was waving at her. My heart dropped and I slapped it down quickly with a muffled noise of fear. "Is that Lilly?" Alex's voice was confused, but weirdly gentle. I could hear Willow let out a small noise of agreement, or maybe just acknowledgment.

"Hey Lilly, everything ok?" I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard her voice, I somehow forgot how nice it was. She was crouched down in front of me while Alex stood next to her with her head tilted to the side gently. How did she get here so fast?! Did she sprint? Did I just freak myself out so bad I just lost some time? I nodded quickly and scrambled up on my feet so she wouldn't have to crouch anymore.

"Jeez, you really don't talk, huh?" Willows arm whipped out to smack Alex in the stomach which made her yelp and cradle her middle. "God! I was just making an observation!" She textured wildly at me and gave Willow a small but friendly glare. "Well it wasn't a nice one!" Willow huffed, crossing her arms. I couldn't help it, I cracked a small grin at her actually defending me.

"You smiled! Hey! That's awesome!" Alex was grinning now, I could practically see her wolfs tail wagging. "Between me and you," she got close and stage whispered, I forced myself to stay in place and not flee like my body was telling me. "I think Jason's an asshole, and the way he treats you because of your dad is total bullshit." Willow sighed heavily and rolled her eyes but I gave Alex a small smile and snagged my white board from my bag. The marker rattled around in the bottom of the bag but I managed to snatch it after a little bit of digging. 'It's all good, thank you, that means a lot.' I showed her the white board and tapped at it with my finger. She moved her mouth to the words, as if sounding them out, before she gave another bright grin. She was about to say something else when the bell cut her off. We all shared similar looks of surprise before I waved goodbye and scrambled into the school.

Everyone was yelling and shoving to get into classrooms before they were counted as late and being so close to so many people made my skin prickle. Being touched was not a favorite pastime of mine and it didn't help when I didn't know half of the people here. They were familiar sure, half of them were probably in my pack. Others were from class or whatever else but I didn't like being near them at all. My white board was still clasped in my hand which provided a small barrier between myself and other people but I could practically feel the pressure of unseen hands grabbing me. I could feel my panic rising by the second and I mentally hit myself for waiting for Willow, I would've seen her anyway, why did I have to wait? I managed to break out of the crowd and scrambled to my first class and tried to calm myself down. The class swirled in my vision and I staggered to stay up for a second, too much adrenaline way too fast. I moved over to my desk carefully and took a seat to control my breathing and wait for class to actually begin. The plus side of today so far is that Alex might actually not murder me if Willow were to tell her we were mates. A strange but comforting fact nonetheless. Maybe things were actually starting to look up for me.
