The moment Kyle pulled up to Adrian’s house an ominous feeling settled into my stomach. There was nothing suspicious about the house; except for the fact that only the living rooms light was on letting Adrian know that his mom was in there waiting on him. Adrian learned from past experiences that his mother waiting on him is never good.

“Our plan was full proof, right?” Adrian asked Kyle.

Kyle slowly turned his head towards him, “How should I know, this was all you’re planning so you should be the one telling me that.”

“Right,” Adrian dragged out. “Would you mind coming in with me.”

“I’d rather restart this day but I might as well. It’s not like I’ve got a choice.”

“You are right about that my friend.”

Both boys exited walking up to the house that a stranger could even identify as a Walk of Shame. Arian unlocked the front door; the lock tumbling open a little too loudly in the silence.

“Adrian get Kyle and come here,” his mother’s words called from the living room.

Adrian and Kyle shared a look of panic before walking into the living room. To their surprise Kyle’s parents were sitting on the couch along with Adrian’s mother.

“Did you honestly think that I wasn’t going to check in with Adrian’s mother myself and just believe you?” Kyle’s mother, Mrs. Wilson, demanded.

Kyle threw up his hands in defense, “Don’t blame this on me!”

“Why shouldn’t we? I don’t care if it was your plan or not, you’re the one with a car so in the end this plan of yours was up to your decision,” Mr. Wilson replied.

“It was my plan,” Adrian supplied, trying to save his friend in anyway possible.

“We knew that,” his mother responded. “You’re always the brains behind these stupid operations; ever since you two were children.”

“And by now we would’ve thought that you knew better than to go along with his plans Kyle,” Mrs. Wilson told her son.

“And that’s why we’re selling your car,” Mr. Wilson continued.

“What! But that’s not fair,” Kyle protested.

“Then maybe you should’ve thought twice before agreeing to one of Adrian’s plans!” Mrs. Wilson countered. “Now come on, we’re going home to discuss your entire punishment.”

The Wilsons rose from the couch and walked toward the entryway behind Adrian and Kyle. As they passed the boys Mr. Wilson grabbed Kyle by his upper arm and dragged him after him. Kyle waved a half-hearted good-bye to Adrian in the doorway before the door slammed shut on all three. Adrian stared at the closed door for a moment; wishing that he didn’t have to face his mother alone.

“Sit,” Ms. Mayer demanded when he showed no sign of moving.

Adrian trudged into the living room and sat into the chair opposite of his mother.

“First off do you know I scared I was. Do you honestly pride it upon yourself to make me have and panic attack every time you step outside that door?”

“Mom I’m fine. I was with the group the entire time!”

“And what good is that in all honesty. I’m trying to not have to bring this up but do you not remember what happened to you father? Him and all of his nine other friends died by the hands of three vampires when they decided to go paintballing all day and well into the night. Are you that arrogant to think that that can’t happen to you because believing me it can happen to anyone! And how did you think I feel when around the time you come home breaking news comes on announcing that a group of five teenagers was attacked at the fair. Three of them are dead and the other two bitten!”

“How was I supposed to know that?”

“Exactly my point. Not only did you know the danger you were putting yourself in by staying out late but you also put your friends I danged by default and nearly gave me a heart attack!”

“But how was that possible, there was security everywhere?”

“Are you that naïve?  The security is only there to protect humans from humans and vampires from humans. They couldn’t give a damn what the vampires decide to due. They control everything, the only laws they uphold are their sadistic cult ones!”

“Mom!” Adrian exclaimed, looking around nervously. There’s one unspoken rule that all humans follow: never speak ill of the vampires. No one knows what the exact consequences are but the rumors are enough to scare people into silence. The most docile rumor is that some high-ranking vampire will show up to your house and drain you blood. The worst one is that you’re kidnapped in the middle of the night and taken to a rehabilitation center where they brainwash you into thinking vampires are god-like creatures.

Ms. Mayer waved away his worry, “Forget it, it’s already out I can’t change it. Just like your behavior apparently.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

She sighed, “It means I’m done with this. No matter how much I ground you you’re not going to change.”

“Yes I can!”

“Well you sure have an odd way of showing it. It doesn’t matter anyway; go pack your bags.”

“Your kicking my out”

“No, I’m sending you to your Uncle Chris. Maybe he can make you see sense. I booked you flight for Monday night so be ready. I hope you’re happy?”
