Saving MacKenzie

Chapter 1

Chapter one:

I wake up to the bright sunlight blinding me.

"Oh I'm sorry Kenz." Rose says to me closing the blinds, "I didn't realize I woke you."

"That's ok i should probably be up anyway..." I smile.

Rose is a volunteer at the children's hospital and she's been working with me for almost ten years now. She is one of my only friends beside Bee who is also a cancer patient. She has liver cancer but isn't on cemo therapy. Rose is like my second family, she has always been there for me. She is usually the one who makes up all of my nicknames. I love her, she's like an older sister to me. She's  in her early twenties now, and her boyfriend always comes to visit. I like Anthony, he is very nice and he makes her happy. I've been telling him to propose soon, I hope he does. She deserves to be happy.

"Kenzie! Maccy!" Rose says trying to get my attention.

"Yeah...,sorry..what?'' I ask.

"You have another surgery at five today." She says looking through my papers.

Even though Rose isn't a nurse she is training to be one and she already acts like it.

"Ugh! Fine....." I grumble.

"Have I ever told you how cute you are even when you're mad?" She says on a sugary voice.

"Almost every minute." I laugh.

"Good cause you are"

I roll my eyes playfully at her.

Most people think I'm like seven, but cancer really tires you out and make you really small and skinny. I can't help it.

"Sooo.....which bandana shall it be today?" She asks.

"I'm going to go with my blue one!" I smile.

"Coming right up!" She says digging into my drawer of bandanas. Rose Is the only person I feel comfortable around with me scars. Not even my parents have seen them with me willingly letting them.

"Do you know what today is?" Rose asks excitedly.

"Umm....Thursday I believe.....or is it friday?" I respond trying to think.

"We'll yeah it's Friday but something important is happening today!!" She cheers

"And that is?" I question.

"Omigosh you don't even remember?" She says in disbelief.

"Should I?"I ask.

"Naw you don't know about part of it,......but for starters it's your birthday!!! Happy thirteenth birthday Maccy!!" She smiles widely.

"Oh yeah! It IS my birthday!" I grin.

"And that mean...." Rose hints on.

"I get presents!" I smile goofily.

"Yeah and....." She says.

"Ok I'm clueless...." I say giving up.

"YOU GET TO GO HOME!!!!!!" she practically screams.

I sit on my bed in shock. Is she for real? I actually can leave the hospital! This is a dream come true!!

"Remember two years ago doctor Ross promised that you can go home on your thirteenth birthday..if you go weekly to get check ups and have a safety plan/kit at home!" Rose cheers happily.

A wide grin spreads across my features. I then cheer along with Rose, "I GET TO GO HOME! I get to go home!" I breath.

"And to say congrats and happy birthday... I'm giving you this" Rose smiles holding out a laptop.

"Omigod! It's just what I wanted!!" I smile.

"Now you don't have to go sneaking around at the downstairs computer." She winks at me.

"You know about that?" I say in terror.

"Calm Down! It's ok! What do you even do on there?" She asks

"Well....I've grown very fond of youtube...I watch these youtubers doing funny videos. I like Jenna Marbles, and Jacksgap, a couple others." I say.

"Interesting." She smiles.

"We'll I have to go for my lunch break your parents will be here soon." Rose says giving me a quick hug then walking out.

I sigh. Im really going home. This is amazing! I wonder what it looks like..maybe it's really fancy and stuff or its a modern flat cause its just mom and dad.

My door creaks and my head snaps up to see my parents standing in the doorway.

"Mom!Dad!" I smile.

"Hello birthday girl! How are you?" She asks.

"Alright...you?" I ask

"We've never been happier! Cuz you are coming home!" Dad smiles

"And we bought you a little something something!" Mom smiles, hands behind her back.

I wait patiently for her to say it...but I think she wants me to guess.

"Umm....a  Record?" I ask.

That's what they got me last year. I really like music from older generations.

"No! We got you a new camera!" They say together.

I start bursting with joy! Out of all of the favorite things I like to do, photography is my most favorite!

"Omg! Thank you soo much guys! I love you!" I smile.

"Glad you like it!" Dad grins.

"It's the newest Nikon."mom says.

"It's beautiful!" I breath.

Then a Cheshire Cat grin spreads across my face. I hold the camera up to my eye and take a picture of my parents' smiling faces. I want to remember this forever!

"Well hunny we need to get back to work! We will see you and pick up after your surgery!" Mom says waving, walking out the wide door way.

"I love you!" I giggle looking down at my camera.

This is the happiest day of my life!
