"Grandma, I'm leaving!" I shout over my shoulder as I run out the door.
"Did you make sure to feed the animals?" she yells back.
"Yes!" I reply. She probably doesn't hear me though, as I'm already halfway down the street. As the bus stop comes into view, I slow down. The cold autumn air bites my cheeks as I walk so I pull my jacket collar up higher. I adjust my backpack before I pull my earbuds out of my pocket and slip them on. Sifting through my playlists I come to my Janet Devlin songs. The sound of Wonderful fills my ears and I raise my head to the sky with a sigh. After a few minutes of scattered thoughts, a sharp jolt to my shoulder brings me back to Earth.
"Hey!" I turn to my pusher who's a fairly large man.
"Watch were you're going." A gruff voice replies.
"It's your fault, you big nub." My best friend Nani stands in front of the man with her hands on her hips. The man turns to me and apologizes before continuing down the street.Nani walks over to me and links her arm with mine, "What're you listening to?"
"Wonderful by Janet Devlin." I answer. We walk in silence for a few more minutes until we reach the bus stop. Nani and I sit down on the only bench."Jack died." I state. Jack was my family's Jack Russell terrier.
"Oh my gosh! Are you okay?" Nani asks worriedly.
"Me? What about you? He loved you the most." I ask her. Nani always played with Jack every time she came over, "And besides, my Grandma already talked to my cousin about getting one of the puppies from her dog." Nani nods slowly before leaning back on the bench.A few minutes later the school bus arrives.
"When do you think the puppy will come?" she asks me as we sit down on the bus. I shrug,
"Don't know. Could be a few weeks still." I reply. In my head I jump up and down with giddiness. The puppy is actually for Nani as a birthday present. It's supposed to come next week along with all the training supplies and my cousin to help with the training."Anyway, how's your Grandma?" Nani changes the subject. I shrug again,
"She's doing alright. The doctor said she just has to take her medicine and not work so hard on the farm." I reply. Nani nods and leans back in her seat. The ride to the reservation's middle school is a short one but today it feels like the whole day. We arrive just a few minutes before the bell. "Bye." I wave slightly to Nani before walking down to my locker wing. My locker is on the top so I have to lean over the person who's below me. "Damn locker." I mutter as I try one more time to open my locker.
"Having trouble?" a voice near me asks. I jump,
"Y-yeah. It must be jammed." I say quietly. The boy nods before slamming his fist on my locker once. Almost like magic, my locker door swings open. I turn to him with a gaping mouth. "How did you do that?" I ask incredulously. The boy just smiles as he walks away,
"Magic." I sigh as I grab my stuff and walk to my classes. The day passes by in what seems like an eternity but is actually just six hours. The daily ending bell sounds and everyone jumps from their seats and runs through the halls to get to their lockers. I slowly pick up my supplies and walk out the door. The halls are somewhat empty now so I don't bother staying near the walls.
I give a small smile to the few stragglers who are still at school but otherwise keep my head down. Big mistake. I bump into a stiff body and immediately apologize,
"Sorry." I say quietly.
"No problem. It was my fault anyways." a familiar voice replies. I look up and smile slightly,
"Magic boy!"
"Locker girl!" We share a smile before Nani walks over to us,
"Hey, Honovi! I see you've met Mark." She states. I nod when I suddenly realize that Mark is the boyfriend Nani has been talking about for the past two months. So I guess him being my crush is out of the question. Nani pulls me over next to her and links her arms with Mark and I's. "Let's walk home together!" she suggests. Mark and I just shrug and begin walking with her.By the time we reach my house, my Janet Devlin playlist has officially been memorized. I detach my arm from Nani's and walk into my house.
"Hey, Grandma!" I shout into the quiet house. No reply. "Grandma?" I call out again.A muffle grunt follows a loud crash which causes me to run upstairs into my parent's bedroom. "Grandma!" I exclaim as I see my grandma lying on the ground with a thousand boxes of my parent's old things surrounding her,
"I'm alright, dearie. Just slipped, that's all." she waves her hand in the air around her. I take her hand and gently help her to her feet. After taking a few deep breathes, she speaks, "Did you get the letter on the desk in the study?" she asks. I shake my head, no. With a simple wave she has me leaving her side and going down into the study. There, on my dad's old desk, is a wax sealed letter. I walk over and pick up the envelope. The insignia stamped on the wax is an intricate A and U entwined with each other and what appears to be plants decorating the other space around them. I know that I'm the only one who can see the plants stamped on because they have a red-ish green aura around them which means that they're from the world that I can see. Cautiously, I pry open the letter and pull out a creme colored paper. As I read the letter, my eyes widen,
"This can't be right. I never even applied to this." I think to myself as I reread the paper over and over again. "What's Anima University?" I say out loud.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
