CHAPTER FOUR : “Her Reality”

[ALENA’S POV]

After putting up six security cameras around the house and a few motion detectors, Alena also installed a high-tech alarm on the gate and all the doors. It would keep the bad guys out unless the bad guy was a hacker who knows how to hack into her security system which was highly unlikely.

It’s been five hours since she went outside and Matthew was already in his room when she got back in. He was probably sleeping already. She should be sleeping too, but she was too keyed up to lie down and rest, so she put on her jacket and went out the back porch to get some fresh air.

She was sitting on a bench with her eyes closed when she heard a noise. At first, she thought it was just the wind shuffling the leaves of the trees in the woods that lined both sides of the house. But after listening more intently, she realised it was the sound of footsteps muffled by the grass. She stood up and took out her gun from her holster without making any noise. She tried to listen for more noises while she silently walked to where she heard the footsteps. She had a hunch that someone was out there, watching the house or maybe trying to get in. She was already about to climb the gate to look for whoever was in the woods when she heard Matthew calling her name from inside the house. The intruder must have realised Matthew wasn’t alone and that he wasn’t sleeping because she heard him or her running away from the house.

Choosing Matthew as priority over a foot chase, she went back to the porch and was about to reach for the door knob when Matthew opened it from the inside.

“There you are. I was wondering where you were. Why aren’t you sleeping? It’s already midnight,” Matthew said, annoyed with worry for her safety.

“I was sitting out here when I heard a noise so I decided to check up on it, but you scared him away because he ran when he heard you,” Alena answered, ushering Matthew inside. It was too dangerous for him to be outside especially when the intruder might still be in the area.

[MATT’S POV]

Matthew was about to tell Alena that she should’ve woken him up the moment she heard someone when he noticed that she was holding a gun.

“What the hell is that Alena?! Why do you have a gun?” he said, barely reining in his temper.

“It’s for protection. I was hired to protect you and it’s normal for bodyguards to carry a gun,” she calmly answered, realising that Matthew was mad at her.

“I’ll call Dave and tell him to get me another bodyguard. You can’t risk your neck trying to protect me. You should have woken me up when you heard someone, you shouldn’t go after an intruder alone. You shouldn’t even be carrying a gun! You might hurt yourself, you idiot!”

[ALENA'S POV]

Alena tried not to laugh, but she couldn’t help herself, she couldn’t stop picturing what Matthew just said. She realised that Matthew was angry because she was worried about her. It was sweet of him to be worried, but she could take care of herself. She’s been doing it for years and the idea that someone is concerned about her safety was so ridiculous. No one has been worried about her since she joined EOF.

[MATT’S POV]

“What’s so funny?!” Matthew glared at her. He wanted to wring her pretty little neck for that stunt she just pulled. She could’ve been hurt and she’s not even sorry about it. She even had the nerve to laugh for scaring him.

“You were worried that I’d hurt myself with my own gun?” she answered in between her giggles. Seeing that Matthew was getting angrier, she stopped laughing and tried to reassure him. “I know how to use a gun, Matthew. I can also protect myself from anyone. You shouldn’t be worried about me. I’ve been taking care of myself for years.”

Matthew turned away from her, went to his room upstairs and slammed the door, he was still so angry at her. Maybe he overreacted a little bit, acting like an overprotective idiot, but his heart was still thumping hard because of fear. When he went to her room earlier to check on her and found it empty, he thought that the men who were after him had gotten to her and that they took her. He had never been more scared in his life.

He was pacing his room, working out his anger, when she knocked.

“Matthew, I’m sorry ok? I never meant to laugh at you. Will you open this door and talk to me?” she asked. “Please?”

[ALENA’S POV]

When Matthew didn’t open the door, Alena turned the knob and opened it herself. He was standing at the foot of the bed, glaring at her. She shouldn’t have laughed like that. She heaved a sigh, went inside his room and sat on the edge of the bed. She wanted to explain, tell him a little about the life she led for the past years without revealing too much details. She wanted him to understand that he doesn’t need to worry about her.

“I’m sorry, ok? I’m just not used to the idea of anyone worrying about me. I just thought it was funny that you thought I’d hurt myself with my own gun. I’m trained to use a gun, Matt. In my line of work, I always have a gun with me. I’ve done missions that are far more dangerous than protecting someone, you know.”

“Why? What exactly do you do in these missions, Alena?” he asked.

“Well, I take risks because it’s my job. I can’t tell you the details of my missions because they’re very confidential. Just think of me as being a police officer minus the badge and the degree. Actually, my job is far more dangerous than what cops do, even Dave’s job as an FBI agent is less dangerous,” she said, trying to make him understand.

“So you’ve actually used a gun before?!” he said, incredulously. He can’t imagine the Alena he knew pointing a gun at someone and pulling the trigger.

“Yes, I have. I’ve also killed people, Matt. All of this isn’t new to me. I’ve been shot at too, you know. Dave gave me this job and if he thought that I couldn’t do it then he wouldn’t have entrusted me with your life. Do you trust Dave?” she asked, trying to make a point.

“Of course I trust him, he’s my best friend.”

“Then you should trust him to know what he’s doing. He asked me to keep you safe, not to worry you to death,” she said while standing up and walking to the door. She wanted to give him time to think about what she said. “You should get some sleep. You still have to go to work tomorrow, I mean later since it’s already past midnight. Can you put some clothes in a bag, just in case we have to suddenly leave? It’s just a precaution I’d like to take in case this house isn’t safe for you anymore. Good night, Matt,” she said with a little smile before closing the door.
