CHAPTER SEVEN : “We’ve Got Company”

[MATT’S POV]

It’s been three days since Alena arrived and he still can’t believe she’s here. Sometimes he would pinch himself just to make sure he wasn’t dreaming. And when he was sleeping, his dreams would be all about her.

It’s only been three days and she was already driving him crazy. Not that she did anything to make him lose his sanity. She was just too damn attractive for his peace of mind that he’s been having a hard time trying to keep his hands to himself.

All his former infatuation with her came rushing back at him every time he looks at her. If she were any other female, he would have made his moves on her to get her in bed the moment he saw her. But this was Alena, the same Alena who left without a word years ago. He had lost her that night and he’s not sure if he wanted her back in his life again.

So he tried to keep his distance, but so far, it’s not working. It was hard to avoid her when it’s just the two of them in the house, so he settled in treating her as his friend. He tried to push his attraction to her at the back of his mind and he hoped that’s enough to not get hurt this time.

After the driving incidence, nothing has happened since, but he noticed that Alena was still alert. She spends some time on the rooftop looking through her binoculars. At first he thought she was looking at the stars like she used to when they were kids, but when he went to check on her one evening he noticed that she was looking at the ground. It made him realise that she was checking if there was anyone around the house. When he tried to comment on it, she just shrugged saying that it was better if she didn’t let her guard down just because nothing untoward has happened lately.

[ALENA’S POV]

It was midnight again and Alena was still up in the rooftop looking through her binoculars. She slept after dinner and woke up around ten p.m. She has a feeling that someone was going to make a move soon and she wasn’t surprised when she saw a black van with no plates pull up on the street a few houses away from them. She waited until five men got out wearing an all-black outfit with ski caps and carrying guns before going back inside to get Matthew. She went to Matt’s room first before getting her things in her room.

“Matt, wake up. We’ve got company. I’ll give you a minute to dress. Hurry up. They’ll be here soon.”

When Matt got up and started to get dressed she went to her room to get her duffel bag and laptop. She already has two guns in her holster and another  two on her ankle straps along with her hunting knife. Her spare magazines were strapped on her waist. She only took them off when she’s sleeping. She didn’t want to be caught unprepared for a fight and that’s what makes her good at what she does for a living.

After giving her room one last glance to check if she left anything, she went back to Matt’s room and saw he was ready to go. She led him to the rooftop quietly and quickly strapped a climbing rope on Matt that was attached to the rails on the side of the rooftop. She told him to get down on his haunches and that they were going to rappel down the side of the house in a few minutes. She was sure the five men would try to get in at the front and back door leaving the sides of the house unguarded.

Three of them were still at the front gate while two were at the back, trying to hack into her lock because they would be electrocuted if they tried to climb it. It would give them about ten minutes before they succeed in hacking it and another five for the locks on both doors. They’ve got fifteen minutes to climb down the side of the house and to make a run to the woods on the right side of the house to and get to her car. But first she had to make that they weren’t outnumbered.
