CHAPTER NINE : “Her Decision”

[ALENA’S POV]

When Alena woke up she was alone in the room and found Matt’s note on the side table saying that he went out to buy some breakfast. They were safe for the meantime; no one knows where they are yet so she wasn't too worried with Matt going out on his own..

She stood up and used the sheets to cover her and went to the bathroom to take a shower. She just finished dressing when Matt opened the door.

They ate their breakfast on the single table in the room and talked about where they would be going. After making love with him earlier this morning, she explained to him as best as she could about her job in EOF. She was glad that he seemed to understand it. They still needed to talk about them, but they agreed that they have to wait until the problem is over before they can promise each other anything. She has been with the EOF for nine years and she’s has already started feeling a little restless. She was thinking of asking Damon for a little time off, but now she realized she wanted to get out of the business. She’s been having a hard time in focusing on her missions lately and she was starting to get sloppy.

After this last assignment with Matthew, she would talk to Damon and Hawkins about her resignation. She knows they would understand. Hawkins has been trying to tell her to slow down the past few years and he was encouraging her to do more “desk” work in the headquarters or to take missions that were less dangerous. He knows her too much that he knows what she wants even before she realised it herself. Damon would also understand her decision because he was more like her big brother than her boss.

She was sure that they would give her her freedom if she asks for it. They were more like family in EOF than co-workers and they look out for each other.

[ALENA’S POV]      

When they reached headquarters that evening, most of the guys who were not deployed in missions were there except for Damon. He has called early that morning to inform them that he wouldn’t be in until late that night.

She took Matt to her private space in the headquarters that were given to her when she joined the team. She had been staying there for the past eleven years when she’s not out of the country doing her missions. Lena gave Matt a secured phone to contact his family, client and to call his secretary. After making sure Matt is doing okay in her apartment, she went to talk to Hawkins about her decisions.

“Hey, baby girl. How’s your friend doing?”

“He’s fine. Hawk, I need to tell you something.”

“I know, baby, it’s about time you get back to your real life, my baby girl,” he said knowingly.

“How did you know I was going to quit being an operative, daddy?” she said, calling him by her nickname for him she seldom uses. Hawkins was like a father to her. He was the one who practically raised and protected her ever since

“Well, Damon and I know this stint with EOF is temporary for you. It was something to give you purpose before. We thought at first that after your first mission, you’d go back to your old hometown and live a normal life. Surprised the hell out of us when you decided to stay, but we realised you weren’t ready to leave this life behind so we let you stay.”

“You and Damon were always there for me. You know me more than I know myself. Thank you,” she said while hugging him, her voice full of emotions.

“This Matthew guy must be pretty special to make you realise what you should’ve realised years ago. So is my baby girl going to get married soon?” he said jokingly.
