A wave of nausea washed over Jim as he stared at the mess of dried blood, matted hair and ragged clothing. He would have thrown up had he not pulled himself together and checked for a pulse. He was relieved to find one, but it was weak and her breathing was shallow and ragged. Bek was alive, but she needed urgent medical attention especially after a night in the freezing cold with only a few layers of protection. He dialled 000 and waited for the Ambulance while monitoring Bek's condition, she was still unconscious.
Once the paramedics arrived and were taking care of Bek, Jim finally had time to think about how suddenly everything had changed, how this morning he had been cursing the very person who was now lying in an ambulance next to him.
How had this happened? Bek had said she was going straight to her hotel! Didn't she know it was dangerous to walk around the streets at night alone? She could have easily got a taxi! He would have let her stay the night, like Em wanted if he knew this was going to happen! Oh no, Em! She didn't know what had happened! He would have to call her, but how could he tell he what had happened? It would be like loosing Bek all over again! Still he would have to tell her something.
Suddenly the Ambulance came to a stop, they had reached the hospital. The paramedics rushed Bek into the emergency ward and left Jim in the waiting room. He pulled out his phone and dialled Em's phone, she picked it up after only one ring, her voice had a nervous edge to it when she answered.
"Hello?"
"Hi Em, it's Jim."
"Oh Jim, thank goodness, Have you seen Bek?" She asked desperately.
Jim took a deep breath before answering, "I just called into the hotel she was staying at and they told me that Bek was still asleep. She was pretty exhausted after traveling all yesterday."
"Oh yes of course, I forgot about that. I suppose the time difference wouldn't help either." She sounded relieved. "Will you be home soon?"
"Sorry honey, Jaclyn just called and asked me to drop by to fill out some paperwork, but I promise I will get home just as soon as I can."
"Couldn't you do it another day?"
"Unfortunately it's rather urgent, otherwise I would be home right now."
"I miss you."
"Miss you too. But, I'll see you later ok?
"Ok, I love you Jim, bye."
"Love you too dear." He hung up.
Jim felt guilty about lying, but he knew that he couldn't have told her the truth. He hoped She would forgive him.
