Mavis' POV:
I chuckled to myself as my Dad, a worried expression on his face, dived out of my window and beat his wigs as he nose-dived into the woods. I was the best at hiding, even though I wasn't as small as I used to be. I came out of my closet and moved towards the window, waiting to wave on Dad's return, he never usually took long until he realised, yet again, he had been tricked.Even I began to get worried when I had to turn my head away from the slowly rising sun. Mavis, stay calm, he'll be back... I knew I had to stay in the hotel, but, what if my Dad was hurt? What if he found Olivia? What if he found out that I discovered he was a murderer? No! Stay in here, you're safe, he'll come home soon!
I waited and waited, watching the guests enter one by one, until I eventually decided to go and greet them since Dad wasn't back.
"Hey! Hey! There she is!" Half of the visitors called, most of them said something along the lines of, "There's the birthday girl, beautiful as always!" But out of the hundred or so guests that were in the lobby, I noticed one, Uncle Wayne, standing leaned against the wall in a dark corner, uninvolved in the celebration. You'd think, considering he's my Dad's best friend he'd at least make an attempt to take part. Aunt Wanda kept looking at him and shaking her head. But I had to stop looking at them, I had to do what Dad told me to- smile and wave.
"Hey everyone! Erm... My Dad will be back soon, he just... Went to do an errand." I could see they were getting impatient, all these monsters wanted to do was party! "I'm going to go and get dressed!" I said awkwardly, I couldn't look at Wayne and his staring, tired eyes any more.On the way back to my room, I stood on a small present outside my bedroom door. The label was written in neat, fancy writing, To, Mavis. To be opened on your 118th. Confused, I thought it was best to open it later, in front of everyone, so I left it on top of my bed.
Clink! Creeeaaakkk! The gate was slowly being opened, the sounds going right through me- that had to be Dad! Excited I rushed down the stairs and was at the bottom within seconds, at the same time my Dad with... An unexpected guest.
"So... Mavis is my si- AHH!" I leapt on top of Olivia before she had anymore time to speak, "Hi Mavis... Did you know that you're m..." I felt my father give her an evil glare and she stopped instantly. I forgot to ask what she was talking about, I was just so happy Olivia was there to spend my (and her) birthday with me!
Dad shuffled off, gave the guests a quick greeting and slid of to his room, leaving me and my friend alone. I did notice tears forming in her eyes,
"A-are you ok, Liv?"
"Yes, I'm fine..." She painted a smile on her face as she probably wanted to enjoy her birthday as well as mine, and I respected that. I gave her a tour of the hotel, leaving my room to last,
"And this is my room! Cozy, huh?" She nodded slowly, obviously unfamiliar with these surroundings, she was a human after all, "Now you have to show my your house!"
"I... This is my house..." I was slightly confused so continued to ask, but she was hiding her secrets constantly, so I rapidly changed the subject. "So it's your birthday too, eh? Bet you've never had a party like the ones here- real blast!" I over-exaggerated a tiny bit, but I felt like I had to. To make her feel more welcome.
"Yeah! I'm going to look a little bit stupid in these clothes, though..." I scanned her up and down. As much as I hated admitting it, she did look pretty stupid...
"Doesn't that present have clothes in?" She hesitated before disappearing around the corner to get ready, I squealed with exitement before I slipped into my Mum's 118th clothes and examined myself in the mirror- I couldn't deny it, I. Looked. Beautiful. And I was sure Olivia did too, so I had a little nosey peek around the corner to find... SHE HADN'T GOT CHANGED AT ALL. She was curled up, crying, clutching a present with the wrapper on the floor,
"Liv? Are you alright?"
"Oh! Mavis! I-I'm fine..." A single tear dropped to the ground as she quickly wiped them away, "I'll get ready now..."
A birthday present wrapper was on the ground next to her, but I didn't want to pry her, she was clearly upset, so I allowed her to change into a stunning red dress, which I was sure I recognised from somewhere... I shrugged and we walked hand in hand down to the party room, that's when the music kicked in and the real party started.Everyone loved Olivia and she soon got over her shyness and looked like she was enjoying herself. Dad was circled by guards 'busting some moves' and I was talking and dancing to some of the guests, when Dad walked over to me and Olivia he put his long, slender arm around us, "Oohh! Your mother would be so proud, girls."
"Wait. What?!?" I was utterly confused. 1. Why was my Dad hugging Olivia and 2. What did he just say? We were addressed with the same Mum.Olivia seemed to know what he was talking about, so this what she was hiding from me. I gave her a glare, the same glare Wayne had given me a few hours ago! "What's going on, Dad? Oh, and I know you killed Frank, by the way!" He gave me a strange, mixed look, like he didn't know what to say, so Olivia spoke up,
"M-Mavis, don't be mad I'll tell you everything!"
"It's too late, just get out!"
She started to cry and ran out of the hotel, her cape dragging behind her, the music stopped.
"Mavy! That was unnecessary! Wh-"
"No Dad! You're unnecesary! What is happening? You know what, save it! I can't deal with you right now!" I stormed off, leaving all eyes on my father, a quiet chuckle escaping Wayne's lips as I ran up to the roof, not knowing where Olivia went. Finally alone, I tore open the small present, inside was a picture of me, Olivia, Dad and, I assumed, Mum.
Then it hit me.
I knew why I'd recognised Olivia's dress, it was the one Mum was wearing in the picture. So, she wasn't a human, she was my sister.
I suddenly felt guilty.
Very, very guilty.
