Soon enough, the basketball game came around. I had tried my best to look good after coming home after school. I put my hair in a low bun, and made sure that not a single hair was popping out from it. I then moved onto my makeup. I made sure it was casual, so I put on a coat of mascara and some light eyeshadow. Then, the outfit. I pondered staring at my closet for what seemed like forever until a knock came on the door.
"Come in!" I hollered.
"Hey sweetheart! Excited for tonight?" It was my mother who had just entered the room.
"Of course! It's the kick-off for the biggest tournament! I can't wait!"
Basketball was my sport. The best sport ever. Alea didn't like to play sports, but boy oh boy did I.
"That's amazing sweetheart! I'm excited that you're excited! I assume you're meeting up with friends?" At this time she had fluttered over to help me out with an outfit.
"Although, I don't think you should go in a baggy oversized t-shirt and sweatpants that are too small." She motioned at my outfit. "Perhaps you could use my help." And off we went.In the end, my mom had chosen - with my approval, a pair of black skinny jeans, a white undershirt, and a comfy hoodie with our schools logo, a wildcat, on it. In the end she also claimed that my hair did not match my outfit, and traded the bun for two French braids. My hair was just long enough to pull off the braids, which I was thankful for. Overall, I think that I looked casual, but fancy and fashionable at the same time. I was happy with my mother's fashion skills. As I was admiring my looks in the mirror, I thanked my mother and she walked out of the room with a wink.
"Let me know when you want a ride!" She hollered over her feet going down the stairs and through my bedroom door.
"I think Oliver's gonna give me a ride, thanks though!" I heard her footsteps stop, and start again at a rapid speed. The bedroom doom flings open, and I see my mothers' face through the door again.
"A boy?! Faye you never told me this! And his name is Oliver?" She was flabbergasted.
It wasn't the first time I had had a boyfriend, but I suppose I hadn't had one since I was a sophomore. Apparently this was big news for her.
"I guess... it's a date?" I said hesitantly.
"How long have you been dating for? Does Alea know?"
"Mom! You have to chill! We're not dating yet, but we'll see what happens."
As on cue, the doorbell rang. It was late fall, so I grabbed my dress coat off a hanger and flung it on. I grabbed my Kate Spade satchel and opened the door. Oliver was standing there. I melted on the spot. Holy Guacamole he's gorgeous.
"Hey Oliver! Thanks for coming to pick me up!"
He extended his arm to me like the prince bringing Cinderella to her first dance - it was magical.
"Of course. Let's go watch the girls win!" He said like a knight in shining armor.
He opened the door of his cherry red Prius, very fancy for a senior in high school. I waved to my dad who was in the window of the door and he have me a sweet smile and a wink. I tried to play it cool while in the car, but I was kind of dying on the inside. We talked for a while in the car and soon enough it was time for us to go watch the opening home game of the tournament. This was my team, but I couldn't play with them tonight, so I was tomorrow. You could say I was pretty good, captain wasn't bad. I played bookie for today's game and couldn't pretended that I was sick to be with Oliver. Out of the blue, my phone gives off a buzz and I go and check it. It was Alea. A pit sank in my stomach.
A: I'm sorry that you can't play tonight! I heard that you're sick. Feel better soon!
Gosh. The guilt built up inside of me during the first quarter. Our seats were amazing, which is what scared me. Apparently Oliver didn't know that I was captain, or else I would probably be on the court because he forced my butt out there. Good news was, it was a huge crowd. If Alea showed up here, chances are that her seats would be far away, the stadium at the high school was gigantic and could fit around 3,000 people. The odds were pretty slim. I let the game carry on without worrying too much, but at halftime, they always have a 3-point shooting contest. I had to resist myself to not run down and shoot.
"Faye, you look a little tense. Everything okay?" Oliver questioned.
"I'm sorry. I'm just a little tense, I really want us to win, I made a bet with, uh, I made a bet."
He shook his shoulders a bit and started cheering again.
"Hey, I'm gonna use the bathroom so I don't miss any of the action. See you in a few."
"I might join you actually. That soda is getting hard to hold in." He chuckled a bit.
As we were walking towards the bathrooms chatting away, he put his hand over my shoulder. I tried not to squeal out of happiness.
"Meet right back here?" He asked.
I nodded my head, smiled, and then walked into the bathroom.
When I walked out to find Oliver, I saw that he was talking with someone. Someone that shouldn't see me here. And that someone was Alea. Out of all the people it could have been, Alea.--------------------------------------------
Whoops! I haven't updated in forever.
Oh well, better late then never. All the best,
Cat❤️
