I grew up as a normal young girl with my 4 year older sister Misty. For starters, in the life that I'm living... BE READY FOR AGE 12! That's the first time you turn... Turn into what? You may be asking... Well, let's just say... I'm not a normal young girl.

I've always loved to swim. From I was extremely young and up to this day.

Even, well, before I knew that mermaids were real.

Now, time for some exposition!

I wanted my mom to see the first time I turned... She was always there for me for anything, the one that always asked me to come swimming with her, she was the one that told me about mermaids. Yes, my dad was a merman and all... But he never really liked talking about merpeople when we were growing up. He left my family when I turned 6, we never liked to talk about him much after that. He never was involved with my family anyway... He was never there when I needed him. I'm happy he's gone...

My mom died when I turned 10 after a freak swimming accident. I was on the beach when I saw it all happen. Two men and a little boy looked to have been fishing they saw my mom's tail, but seeing as they were just average humans I guess they just thought she was a big fish. One of the men cast their line and it headed straight for my mother. I couldn't even call out to her because that would draw attention to her. I saw the hook yank on my mother's tail. I saw blood... remnants of her tail... I saw everything... I saw the men try to pull in my mother but all that came to them was her tail... She was holding onto a rock that was on the beach side for her dear life...

She died that day.

I ran into the house crying my eyes out.

"Bay..." My sister tried to comfort me "What's wrong?" She gave me a concerned look, fear in her eyes as if knowing I was going to say something awful.

"I-it its mom..." I told her, tears still pouring out of my eyes. "She... she's gone.." Tears started forming in her eyes, she cupped her mouth and started shaking her head. We sat on the couch and we cried for a good ten minutes, not wanting to do anything else. We soon remembered what my mom told us if something like this ever happened to her.

We picked up the phone and dialled my aunt's number. My sister and I have lived with her ever since. We never mentioned my mother unless we were looking at pictures, which we rarely did because it would just bring up a tear fest of emotion.

I never had many friends. I was kind of the nerd in the class and I was always the 'new' kid because no one came to my school after me. So that resulted in a lot of bullying.

I remember someone once said I was driving people away from the school because there was no one else arriving.

Eventually, there was a new, new girl. Nicole Johnson from my school didn't know anything about the teasing and my other life problems... So we eventually became friends. She understood what I was going through because her dad died in a plane crash when she was four. While she missed him dearly, she couldn't remember much of him. I told her about my parents but obviously, I had to lie about what happened to my mom. At that time, I wasn't ready to tell anyone about my secret.

Anyways, at the age of twelve, I was finally 'ready' to turn. Well, I wasn't exactly ready... But it was going to happen no matter what. I was excited yet still scared. Since we lived near a beach area it was blocked off all around. Hopefully, no one could see us.

I saw Misty dive into the water as her feet were submerged in water. About 10 seconds later, a tail replaced her legs. I caught a glimpse of her grass green tail as she jumped out of the water and dived back in.
