Chapter 12

Tricia's POV

I was staring down into the eyes of the only man that has ever made my heart beat faster. He was asking me to be his wife. Every eye in the restaurant was trained on the two of us. Without being able to say a word due to all of my emotions being in my throat, I nodded my head and he jumped to his feet and whirled me around like a mad man. Looking to a random person in the crowd he yelled, "She said yes!" Everyone cheered and then just as quickly went back to meals leaving us to our moment. Danny kissed my lips so very tenderly that tears welled up in my eyes.

"Thank you," he said as he laid his forehead to mine. As we stood in the restaurant he placed the ring on my finger. I looked down at the ring for the first time and it was beautiful. I twist and turned my hand to watch the diamond sparkle.

"I know that I haven't always been the best person in the world, but I do love you and I will spend every day that I have left being the best man and father I can. Also, I want you to know that I don't expect you to take on responsibility for Christine," he said. His words were sweet and sincere, but something was bothering me.

"Do you think that I am not capable of caring for Christine like she needs?" I asked feeling hurt.

"No, baby I just don't want you to think that I am looking for a mother for Christine. I want to marry you because I love you and I know you love me too. You being great with Christine is a bonus for me. I would say whoever I marry would have to love Christine to be my wife, but you are the only woman I would ever consider marrying so it's a moot point," he said taking a bite of his food. Looking down at my plate I no longer felt hungry. Tears were pricking my eyes again but this time in sadness. He doesn't want me to be Christine's mother. Anger surged through me as I have never felt before. Slamming my napkin down, I stood from the table throwing 20 dollars on the table as Danny sat there staring at me in shock.

"That's a hell of a thing for you to say to me!" I said loudly. Turning from the table I ran out of the restaurant. As I was stepping into a cab I saw Danny running from the restaurant after me.

"There's a good tip in it if you get me the hell out of here and quick," I said to the cabbie. He mashed on the accelerator flinging me back into the pleather seat in the process. As it was dark I hoped the cabbie couldn't see the tears falling from my face. One quick sniff alerted him though because he soon began talking to me.

"You okay back there miss?" he asked actually sounding concerned. Taking the tissue he offered me I wiped my face and blew my nose.

"I will be," I said vaguely.

"You wanna talk about it? People usually don't mind unloading on the cab driver because you don't have to worry about me tellin anyone," he said with a concerned smile.

"You ever have one of those days that seems perfect and then it turns to shit before you can even consider what is happening?" I asked him as I went into telling him my life story. Finally, we pulled up into my driveway.

"Thanks for listening to all of my incessant rambling," I tell him as I step out of the cab.

"No problem and miss?" he called out as I was handing his money, plus the tip I promised.

"Yeah," I returned.

"If jackass doesn't work out, you can always hunt me down and I will treat you like a princess for the rest of your life," he said smiling wickedly. I knew he was only trying to make me feel better and it worked. I laughed as he drove away laughing to himself. Reaching out to open the front door I saw the glittering of the ring that was still on my hand. Once again I couldn't keep from twisting and turning it in the low glow of the porch light. Taking it off before my crazy mother seen it, I stuffed it in the zipper of my purse.

The next morning I woke with a major headache. Fumbling my way to the kitchen I found some excederine migraine and popped two of them and downed a half of a graham cracker with a small glass of water. I prayed to God above that my mother would not be awake yet, I could not handle her peppy morning singing just yet. Crawling back into my bed I grabbed my phone, which I had put on silent after last night's disaster and noticed that I had many missed calls and texts from Danny. Hitting speed dial #2 I waited while it rang and rang. Finally, Jenn answered.

"Hello," she said groggily.

"Hey sweetness, sorry I woke you. I have a major headache but I need you to come see me. I don't think I can drive with this pounding in my brain," I said.

"Tricia!" she yelled. Wincing I nodded like an idiot as if she could see me.

"Yes, please lower your voice," I pleaded.

"Oh, sorry," she whispered. "Are you okay? I got a panicked call from Danny last night."

"I am fine, but I need a favor from you. I have a package for him and I need you to give it to him," I said.

"Ew, I do not want to know the kinky details of you and my big brother," she said giggling.

"Jenn, please it's nothing of the sort. Just get your bum over here and please do me this one favor," I begged.

"Fine, be there in 20," she said hanging up. I threw my phone on my bed and closed my eyes hoping this headache would clear. Right on time I heard the doorbell and also heard mother answer the door. I put my pillow over my head to drown out the loud squeal of my mom cheerfully answering the door.

"Hey there," Jenn said. Pulling the pillow from my face I saw her looking me over.

"Hey," I said back.

"You look like hell honey," she said to me.

"Oh you sweet talker you, now I know why Marty married your ass," I told her sarcastically.

"What do you need?" she asked. Picking up the envelope that I had slipped the ring into I handed it to her.

"I need you to give this to your brother," I told her hoping she would just do as I ask without question. She felt of the envelope and I saw the surprise register on her face and she threw the envelope back at me.

"He gave you a ring?" she asked.

"Yes, and now I want him to have it back," I said grouchily due to the headache and heartache I felt.

"Why?" she asked sitting on the edge of my bed.

"He doesn't want me to be Christine's mother," I said. She looked confused.

"Christine has a mother that is currently dying," she said almost angrily.

"You don't understand! I promised Natasha that I would be a mother to Christine but Danny doesn't seem to think I am capable of the job," I said breaking down into sobs which increased the throbbing in my head.

"Oh, OH!" she said. Finally, she understood. Feeling my stomach lurch I pushed past my best-friend and ran to the porcelain throne to release the graham cracker I had ingested. Jenn was right there holding my hair like a good best-friend.

"I am sorry Tricia and I will take it to him, but I really think you should talk with him yourself," she said as I leaned my head against the bathroom wall. She looked a little green as she turned away as I got sick.

"Thank you. I love you Jenn," I said as I stood and washed my mouth out and returned back to my bed.

"Love you too," she said as she closed my door quietly.
