Chapter 6

Unknown POV

As I stepped into my old beat up pinto that was older than I, I was shocked when the passenger door also closed. This caused me to gasp as look to my side to see a large man sitting there with a ski mask on his face and a gun pointing into my side.

“How about you start this piece of shit, darling, before I decide the ride isn’t worth it,” he said as he poked the large shot gun into my ribs. Like someone else was controlling my body I automatically started my car. As I pulled out of my parking space and began driving down the lot toward the road I wasn’t sure where I was supposed to be going.

“Turn left at the road and head toward I-77 and don’t try anything funny or I will be driving myself. And don’t think I am afraid to kill you because I killed a man in New York City, so I am not afraid to take out a little woman such as yourself,” he said menacingly.

“W-what do you want from me? As you can tell by my old beat up piece of crap I have no money,” I said desperately.

“Just shut the hell up and drive,” he said as he turned a whiskey bottle up to his mouth and poured much of the contents down his throat. The more he drank the more he told me about the people he has killed in the past. The further down the interstate we traveled I realized that I was about to die and there is nothing I can do about it. Tears began streaking my face and I could only think about my family and how much I will miss them. I know they will miss me too. This will devastate my parents.

“Pull over,” he said on a random stretch of the interstate while cars zoomed past us. “Get out,” he said. My heart began to pound furiously as he followed me into the forest with the gun in my back. We had walked a long way into the woods when he stumbled and I took that as my chance to live and ran for all I was worth. I heard him yelling my name as I ran. As I heard his voice and footsteps coming closer I knew I had lost. He grabbed me by my ponytail and jerked me to the ground as he began ripping my clothes from my body.

Meanwhile back on I-77…

Dante was patrolling along the interstate and it had been a mostly quiet day. As soon as that thought came through his mind he scolded himself harshly. To a cop the Q word “quiet” was blasphemy. As soon as someone thought or said it the world always seemed to implode. His thoughts wandered to Jenn and Marty, he glad to see them so happy, but he couldn’t help be jealous. He wasn’t jealous in the way that he wanted Jenn for himself, but rather he wanted what they seem to have; true love. Traveling north on I-77 he noticed on the southbound side an old beat to crap pinto on the side of the road without its flashers on. Just as he was about to go check it out he was sidetracked by a speeder. Quickly making pursuit he made a mental note to check out the car later. About an hour later he met up with a highway patrol buddy of his named Frank Sousa and they were discussing the stops and how things were going on patrol today, when Dante realized they were parked near where he thought he had spotted that old car earlier in the day.

He began telling Frank about it and how he assumed that whoever owned it must’ve got it fixed when they both saw a woman walking out of the woods with just a jacket covering her body. They both got out of their cars and began toward the woman. When she saw them in their uniforms she began running to them and soon was hugging herself to Dante as she sobbed fiercely. Dante was trying to hear what the lady was saying while trying desperately to hold the jacket to her so that she was covered.

“Frank call EMS,” Dante said as Frank leaned over and spoke into his shoulder radio.

While they waited for the ambulance Dante carried the lady back to his patrol car and sat her inside while he retrieved the blanket he kept in the trunk just for a purpose like this. Coming back to the front he noticed the lady looking much like a wild animal trapped, he head whipping from side to side looking for danger.

“Ma’am a blanket,” I said to her, she nodded and stepped from the car. I wrapped the blanket around her, she tucked the blanket under her arms leaving her shoulders and arms bare. Quickly, Dante shrugged from his jacket and placed it around her shoulders. She was shaking and mumbling with tears still streaming down her face. Dante’s heart broke looking at the woman who had obviously been assaulted in some way. Her head was bloody and he wasn’t sure where the blood was coming from.

The ambulance finally arrived and Dante carried the lady to the back of the ambulance as they were pulling the stretcher out. He laid her gently on the stretcher, but as he was pulling away she cried out and clutched onto his shirt.

“P-pplease, don’t leave me with them,” she said as she looked around at the two male emts.

“Okay, I won’t,” he promised her and she nearly instantly dropped her grip on his shirt and went unconscious. Walking back to Frank, Dante told him to follow them to the hospital so that he could bring Dante back for his patrol car.
