Chapter 2
Stepping out of the shower, I threw my clothes on. Checking myself in the mirror, I styled my hair. Yep, I look pretty damn hot and it's all for my woman. Slipping my boots on, I heard the doorbell ring, which I thought was odd because everyone is gone but me; must be a salesman or something. Running down the stairs I yelled out, "I'm coming."
Reaching the door, I pulled it open and to my surprise I was looking at a girl from California. We were pretty good friends until she up and disappeared from college.
"Natasha?" I asked perplexed at her showing up on my door step. I haven't seen her in over a year.
"Hey Dan, how are you?" she asked.
"Good, what's up? Hey, sorry about my manners come on in," I said feeling dumb for not inviting her in before.
"Dan, I have something important I need to talk to you about," she said looking straight at me.
"Are you okay?" I asked looking behind her making sure she wasn't in some sort of trouble.
"I'm fine," she said as I stepped aside for her to come in. She reached down beside her picking up a baby seat thing. Weird, I don't remember anyone saying she had a kid. Oh shit, I have a very bad feeling about what she needs to talk to me about. I led her into the living room and offered her a seat on the couch. I sat beside her feeling that I might pass out.
"Dan, I need to ask you if you remember Steve Lanz's party?" she asked. Sinking feeling is now a pit in my stomach.
"Yeah," I said slowly. It was crystal clear what was happening here, but I need to hear her say it.
"Do you remember what we did that night?" she asked. I nodded.
"As much as you do," I said.
"Well, I knew you were trying to get through school so I didn't tell you that, that night we made a little baby girl," she said. No build up, just bam you are a father. I tried to talk but couldn't get a damn word out.
"This is Christine Dhira Castanza," she said pulling the baby from the seat. She was the most beautiful little thing I had ever seen. When Natasha turned her around I saw my blue eyes looking back at me through this little angel.
"You named her after my mom?" I asked. She nodded and smiled weakly.
"Can I hold her?" I asked. Natasha handed her to me. Little Christine just looked at me and grabbed my nose giggling. Looking to Natasha she had a pained look on her face.
"Why didn't you tell me about her? School or not I would have wanted to know," I asked feeling indignant now. I had every right to be a part of this baby's life from day one.
She fluttered with the baby blanket she had in her hands and stuttered a little.
"Well, I came to tell you two months after the party. When I got to your apartment you had a very leggy redhead wrapped around you and I lost my nerve to confront you. Then after that I just couldn't do it. I am here now though and I am sorry," she said.
"Shot, Believe me, I had no clue or I would have hunted you down," I said.
"Dan, I know you had no idea and I had no delusions of you being in love with me or anything like that. I knew we were both out to just have fun that night and we were both clueless until we sobered up the next day," she said.
