Ferris Ironworks, Croydon 1868
The morning sun beamed down on the miserably industrial town of Croydon. The sky was a sombre grey, polluted by the black, billowing smoke of factories.
George Westhouse waited placidly in a desolate corner by the train tracks, positioned behind a large shipping crate in the shadows.
"The iron ships from here." George explained sternly, steadily turning to face Jacob and Evie Frye.
Evie stood with impressively composed stature, her chin held high and her focused blue eyes narrowed at George.
Listening intently, Jacob squared his shoulders and set his jaw daringly.
"The Templar running things is Rupert Ferris, and our target one." George informed, sharply eyeing Jacob who nodded understandingly and shuffled with anticipation.
"Target two is Sir David Brewster," George continued, averting his eyes to Evie. "He's got his hands on a bauble that could ruin us in this wretched war."
George conclusively turned his back to them and moved away, motioning for the twins to follow. "Think you both can handle it?"
"What a question." Jacob's smug voice rang from above.
Startled, George spun towards them, gawking up at the mischievously smirking twins who'd climbed atop the shipping crate without the older Assassin noticing.
"Oh, right, my mistake." George asserted derisively, glowering up at them with disdain. "Ladies and gentlemen; the unstoppable Frye twins. See them nightly at Covent Garden." He drawled sarcastically as Evie and Jacob exchanged a grin.
Jacob nudged Evie when he heard the faint whistle of an approaching train, waiting close to the tracks as George made a hasty ascent atop the crate.
"George, honestly," Evie reassured him earnestly, turning to the George, who towered beside her. "I've studied the plans of the laboratory and have every route covered."
"And I've got all I need," Jacob began in a low voice, unsheathing his hidden blade from his wrist. "Right here," The sun glistened off the blade briefly as Jacob sheathed the dagger. "I'll extend your regards to Ferris." Jacob grinned, roughly patting George over the shoulder.
"Chat later, George," Evie said quickly, flashing him a broad smile and turned as the train screeched past. "We've a train to catch."
In unison, the twins lunged from the shipping crate and leaped onto the train's roof, their feet planting against the moving roof of the train.
"Jacob! Evie!" George yelled with irritation after the twins, stepping forward to watch after the departing train. "May the Creed guide you, you vagrants!"
"Poor man, more afraid than ever." Evie speculated thoughtfully, peering out from beneath her dark hood at George's left-behind figure. "The years have not kind."
