Chapity Three

"Okay..." I said looking awkwardly at Dan. "Where did you want to take me anyway?"

"Well." Dan replied. "I figured that you needed a place to stay away from this asshole." He nudged Brad's crumpled form with his foot.

"So we can go to the cafe down the street and you can call someone." Panic set in for me.

"Oh shit. " I told him and started to breathe heavily. "He's going to kill me when he wakes up." I began to struggle for breath.

"Shhh breathe." Dan said gently and as he did this he took off his jacket and put it on my shoulder's while steering me down the street to the cafe. We must have been quite a sight. He helped to calm me and I started to breathe more easily. I looked up at him gratefully. He suddenly became aware of his arm around my shoulder and took his arm off. He opened the door to the cafe for me.

When we were sat down at one of the tables I noticed Dan looking at me thoughtfully. I was suddenly aware that he didn't know me at all.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked him shifted uncomfortably in his too big coat.

"Oh sorry." Dan looked down and stirred his drink. "I was just wondering why someone like you would be with an asshole like him."

I sighed. "I know. I just can't break up with him. He'll just hurt me if I try."I shrugged my shoulders helplessly. "I'm stuck." Dan looked at me thoughtfully again.

"You could just cut him out of your life."

"I can't do that."

"Why not?" Dan looked at me and seemed frustrated. "Don't tell me that you love him."

I stared at him. "I don't love him at all. I loathe him with every fiber of my being." Dan nodded and then asked.

"Then why can't you leave him?"

"All of my stuff." I replied shamefully. "My dog, my clothes, everything I own." Dan thought for a second and then replied.

"Well I guess then I'm coming with you to get it."
