My mom was the classic southern mother. She was strict when she needed to be, raised us to be hard workers and polite. I tried to remember this when she restricted me from staying out past 8, and took my car keys away from me. I used my car to get around town and to drive myself to school when Levi was sick or not going to school, which was rare but it did happen. I groaned as I dropped my keys into her palm and she locked them into my dad's safe.
"All we were doing was having fun," I explained to my dad while he threw another hay bale in the back of the truck. I guess my mom didn't remember what it was like to be a teen. Usually things like this that involved Levi she just blew it off and laughed with my dad but reminded me that it wasn't polite to do it or whatever.
"I know, but she's your mother and she will discipline you if she feels you deserve it," My dad exclaimed. "I'm sorry bud I love you, I do, but I am not choosing a side because you feel it isn't fair."
Levi called me last night telling me that he had my necklace. He said that he seen it on the ground and didn't trust Foster not to lose it again. He told me to meet him after dark because the fact that I wasn't allowed to have friends over which I am sure if Levi did come around my mother wouldn't refuse him a meal let alone a kiss on the cheek. I felt like I needed some alone time with him. I attempted to ride Grady just around the fields and mom told me to put him back away that my grounding also meant horse riding.
I counted down the hours till I could leave the house. I wasn't use to staying around the house since I got my car and Levi got his. I guess I should have reevaluated myself when I said I didn't care if I got grounded. Foster texted me only to apologize for the hundredth time. I assured him that it was fine and that I found it. He was relieved and I was relieved of the duty of having to reassure him every second that I wasn't mad at him. We planned a date on Wednesday the last full day of school. This week was going to be all Exams. I was thankful that yearbook was already done, Clay/ceramics was too, and P.E was basically playing dodgeball all hour.
My French doors to my patio creaked as I attempted to open them slowly and somewhat quietly. I slid down the biggest tree branch and climbed the various small ones till I was at the last one with about a 3 and a half 4 foot jump. Getting down was the easy part getting up was the hard part for me. I silently thought about how I was going to get back up the tree on my way to brooks pond.
I jogged the half mile to brooks pond easily. I was a little rusty since neglecting my every morning runs but I managed it in about 5 minutes. Levi was leaning on his trunk when I arrived, while I was sort of panting. I sat on the back of his car as well, leaning back taking a deep breath in since leaving. My driveway was a quarter mile itself.
"I think that I have something of yours," He grinned.
"I believe you do," I answered smiling.
He pulled a gold chain from his pocket and it revealed to be the necklace. He put his hands around my neck to put the necklace on me. He was close enough to where I could feel the heat coming off of him. He continued to fidget with the lock.
"You need some help there?" I offered, his arms still around my neck fidgeting with the clasp.
"I got this Daniels," He breathed.
He got the lock to clasp together but he left his hands on the back of my neck. I put my hands on his arms and we just looked at each other smiling. He kissed me on the forehead. Something that he has done since we were kids. Something his mother did to him, to tell him that she loved him.
