Chapter 15
LEA
“So, she’s really gone, isn’t she?” Melissa shook her head and laughed without humor. We were all sitting on her bed, each of us in our own little world. Mel was resting her head against the headboard and had her legs lying straight out in front of her. Trevor was sitting at the foot of the bed twiddling his thumbs and I was sitting right next to Mel, resting my head on her shoulder. Well, there was space in between due to the invisible shield, but it was as close as I could get.
We have been sitting like this making small talk for twenty minutes and my guess was that Trevor was letting the information he just unleashed sink in. I told him a countless number of times to tell Mel certain things, but he discreetly shook his head so only I could notice. I had so much to say to Mel, but the last thing I wanted was to over whelm her. I think that is what Trevor was trying to avoid, hence him not telling her anything I said. He had just told her that I wasn’t suffering and that I was as safe as I could possibly be, even though Trevor and I both knew that wasn’t completely true. Cane was still on the loose.
“Wait,” Mel said while sitting up from her comfortable position. “You’ve seen her though, haven’t you?”
Trevor looked up from his thumbs and looked at Mel with surprise. “Um no… Well, actually yes, but not really.”
Mel crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. She does this when she wants to get information out of someone and it is a strategy that works 99% of the time. Those blue eyes can squeeze any type of secret out of you, almost like a ‘word vomit’. It’s mostly because she makes you feel so awkward that the words just come pouring out of your mouth. She will stare at you forever with her eyebrow raised until you give in.
Trevor’s thumbs slowly went back to spinning around in quick circles before he gathered enough courage to speak under Mel’s serious eyes. That girl really can be intimidating when she wanted to be.
“What I’m trying to say is that no… I haven’t seen her physically, but her reflection shows up in mirrors. I can also hear her speak to me.” He slowly lifted his head to gain eye contact, but I noticed that he came up short when Mel slid off the bead and walked over to her dresser. She picked up the photo frame of the two of us at camp and carried it back over to her bed. When she sits back down, she doesn’t reply, but instead runs her thumb up and down the edge of the frame. Her facial expression was a mix of sadness and awe.
“How… How did you know that I could talk to her?” Trevor asked. This was something that was nagging at the back of my mind too. From the first time we met, I got to know that Melissa was a huge gossip. She seemed to know practically everything about every student that goes to Springsville High, even after the students are long gone and had moved away from this town. She would always go on about people’s personal lives while I would just tune her out since I hated almost all the people she talked about. Why would I want to know about the personal lives of the people I hate?
The thing I don’t understand is, when Trevor first dropped out, Mel would talk about how people made fun of him for being crazy and she has always been the type of person who heard all the rumors, but she never believed that they were true. She just liked to hear what was going on in other people’s lives, even if it’s true or not. What made the rumors about Trevor so different? My brain is starting to hurt from trying to figure it out.
Mel shrugged her shoulders and looked away, as if she was embarrassed. “People used to say stuff about you and your family and how you guys were crazy for saying that you were able to communicate with the dead. Well, I’m not the type of person to believe rumors, even though I spread them once and awhile, but that’s not the point,” Mel rolled her eyes and started pulling at her frizzy curls. “The point is that I didn’t believe them until one day, I walked by the boys locker room and I heard someone talking from inside. I only heard one voice, so I decided to check it out. I know, I know, I was nosy but that isn’t the point either.” Mel gave a frustrated sigh and looked up at Trevor with apologetic eyes.
