Chapter 19

LEA

We went down the stairs and made our way to the lounge, since that is where Miss Leona usually is. Our judgement was correct because right when we entered the room, Miss Leona stood up and greeted us, saying that she had been waiting for us to show up. Instead of wearing her popular purple robe, she wore a floral neon orange one with flowing sleeves that reached the floor. It was a memorizing sight that made my eyes widen like saucers.

"Lea, what happened to your arm? It's pale," Dakota was perched on Miss Leona's shoulder in her usual slouch and had her tiny, hairy arms crossed over her chest. I still can't get used to the fact that she is in a ferret's body and the sight of her beady black eyes looking at me tends to send creepy shivers down my spine.

"We are currently trying to find an answer to the question," Trevor mumbled, shifting his eyes in my direction.

"Trevor, what is Dakota talking about? Is Lea alright?" Miss Leona's voice sounded worried and even though it is wrong and selfish, it sounded like music to my ears because she was worrying for me. That was something my own mother never gave me. My mother avoided anything that could cause a negative ripple in her life and unfortunately, my problems caused negative tsunamis. That's why, as a way to avoid it, she would send me to therapy and not give me a single glance.

"Tell her that I'm alright," I forced, wiping away the droplets that were now forming on my eyes. What is it with me and crying these days?

"She's fine, Auntie," Trevor ran his hand through his hair. "Actually, let me show you."

Trevor jogged out of the room without another word. No more than 5 minutes later, he came back with a standing mirror and placed it in front of Miss Leona. "Lea, come stand beside her, then she'll see."

I followed his request and stood beside Miss Leona. I knew she saw my nonexistent arm when I heard her gasp and place her hand to her mouth.

"Lea, what is happening to you?" She whispered.

"Your guess is as good as mine," I sighed. If Miss Leona didn't know what is wrong with me, then who did? I had a feeling that Cane knows the answer to that question, but I'm not going to be risky and go back to him. I'd be happy if I never see his face ever again, but with my luck, Cane isn't too far away and I'm sure I will see him soon.

"Aha!" I didn't realized that Miss Leona already left me alone and was now sitting at the centre table, going through mounds of dusty old books. "There has got to be an answer in one of these. Obviously, research is going to be the key in us solving this mystery."

Trevor nods in agreement and joins Leona at the table. Stacks and stack of books were piled on the table and it only took five minutes for me to only hear complete gibberish from them. I could barely see Trevor anymore from the amount of books that were around them and by the sound of their conversation, it sounded like they were deep into their work and that they were going to be there for awhile. I yawned without thinking.

"You want to go get some fresh air?" Dakota crawled up onto the bean bag chair next to me and then leaped onto my thigh. "My guess is that they are going to be here for a little while, so let's get out of here. It's not like we can understand what they're talking about. They're complete geeks when it comes to that paranormal history and stuff and I try my best to not let it wore off on me." She sent me a wink and gestured for me to follow her out the door.

It was odd seeing Dakota with this nice attitude. Since I called her a rat, she has sent me the cold shoulder, but now, she seems to have a change in heart. I wonder why that is...
