Chapter 18

For Many Years

Keo plunked his tray down beside Phoenix's. The cafeteria was rather loud, as usual, and he thought that he might have stepped in some apple sauce on his way over to their regular table.

“So tell me, what exactly is on my plate?” he inquired to Phoenix who was already eating his lunch.

“Mac and Cheese,” he answered.

Keo took a bite of it and made a face. “How did they manage to under cook the noodles, but burn the cheese?”

“You really shouldn't be a food critic when you eat the school meals. I don't even pay attention to them. It's just food to make sure I don't go hungry.”

Keo was about to reply, but he closed his mouth when he saw Desiree walking toward them with her tray. They made eye contact, but she broke it by looking away and walking past them. He couldn't remember the last time they ate their school lunches on separate tables.

“Why is she sitting with the pep snobs over there? Does she really think it would be better to sit with them instead of us?”

Phoenix looked at Desiree sitting across the cafeteria thoughtfully with his plastic fork pressed against his lower lip. “She doesn't agree with the decision we've made, but she can't run away from it forever. The truth will seek her if she doesn't seek it.”

Keo leaned on his elbow as he looked at him. “That was surprisingly deep for you. Do you really think that will happen?”

Phoenix couldn't seem to take his eyes off of Desiree as he replied, “Something tells me it will. Her fate was sealed the moment she was born, just like ours and everyone else born like we were. Different.”

Keo frowned and turned back to his food. “Why do I feel like you are quoting some comic book?”

“Actually it's from an anime.”

His best friend planted his face into the table rather loudly in response.

Phoenix's fingers skittered about on his Gamecube controller as Keo and him yelled rather ridiculous insults at each other. He was winning on Super Smash Brothers Melee. He had already taken away all the lives of the two computer players and was now working on Keo's character. Phoenix was his usual character, the Ice Climbers, and Keo was Kirby, who was his usual. Keo's Kirby was currently wearing a fuzzy hood because he had sucked up Phoenix's Ice Climbers at one point. They both were on their last life.

Right when Phoenix's Ice Climbers came up to Keo's Kirby for his final attack, Keo shoved him to the ground, giving him just enough time to kill his character and win before Phoenix got back up. Keo exclaimed in victory.
