Chapter 9

Borrowed Memories

In Andre's dream, he could see a castle. Right away, he knew it was the Royal Castle even though it looked a bit different. It was elegant and regal, as always, but newer looking. It was like he was floating over it and it was slowly getting closer. He was in the courtyard. There were two children that looked not any older than seven playing there. The girl had long curly golden blond hair, muddy brown eyes, and wore a beautiful Victorian dress, but she held the front up, revealing long white socks, bloomers, and buckled black shoes, to kick a ball to the boy. The boy looked younger than her. He, too, had curly hair, but it was orange and at his ears along with gray-green eyes and freckles. His clothes were poofy and lacy. Obviously, they, too, were Victorian style. Their clothes looked rather expensive.

A little bit away, he could see a man and a woman watching them play. With a jolt, Andre recognized the man as King Axel, one of the many kings of America he had learned about back in history class, but he had died hundreds of years ago.

He could hear the children laughing as they played and at times, the king and queen would laugh, too. Andre could only guess that they were their children. It was a bit odd to watch them because it was like a skipping DVD. The sound was kind of faded, almost ghostly. It was slightly creepy, but Andre watched carefully, trying to remember everything this time.

“Pass me the ball, Mindy!” called the boy.

The girl, Mindy, kicked the ball to him.

“Thou art not a match for me, June!” she challenged.

The scene slowly disappeared and a new one formed. Andre could feel a lapse in time. He saw Mindy again, but she was a little bit older. She was swinging on a wooden swing tied to a tree. Her younger brother, June, was a little bit away picking dandelions. A different little girl sat near the swing. She was chubby with long brown hair and hazel eyes. Her pale hands were making crowns out of dandelions. She was also wearing a dress, but it was much less exquisite. She was obviously a peasant girl. June brought her some more dandelions. She thanked him as Mindy jumped off the swing and ran over to them to claim her crown.

“I want that one! I want that one!” she squealed as she took one from the other girl's pile and put it on her head.

June giggled as she helped him put on his. The peasant girl smiled, revealing a small gap between her two front teeth.

“Thank you for making these, Felicia. Thou have such nimble hands. Let me help you put on yours.”

Mindy picked up the one that was left from the pile and placed it on the head of the little girl, Felicia.

“We all match!” laughed June.

“They are friendship crowns,” clarified Felicia with another grin.

“Okay, then we all have to promise to be friends forever,” Mindy announced.
