I picked up a box and walked towards our new home. I wasn't exaggerating when I said it was beautiful. The exterior was so English it hurts, but that was also my favourite. The inside of the house had been modernised.
"What do you think?" my dad asks, coming up to me.
"I love it!"
My parents was very scared I wasn't going to like it, so they let me pick my room from photos earlier. I went inside, and upstairs to find it. It had a huge window that overlooked the driveway. The walls of my rooms were painted white, and the wall-to-wall carpet had been replaced with wood flooring.
I sat the box down, taking in my new life.
I am actually excited for the new year.
We finished getting all our stuff into the new house. The rest would come later this week.
-----
Three days later
"Happy birthday, Ashley!!"
I was abruptly woken from my Logan Lerman dream to find my parents hovering over me. I rub my eyes. Mom was carrying a breakfast tray and my dad had Addison in one arm and presents in the other.
"Happy sixteenth birthday!" Mom said, putting the breakfast tray down in front of me. "Oh wow thank you!" I said, still half asleep.
It was very nice. They didn't have to do this.
I opened their presents. The first one was a gift cards to TopShop so I could go get myself some new clothes for the new year. The second one was the blue polaroid camera I had wanted for months. I squealed in happiness.
"Oh my god, thank you!" I say, hugging them both.
My dad pat my head, as lovingly and awkward as only a dad could, before saying, "We're sorry it's not the extravagant Sweet Sixteenth you were promised at the beginning of the year"
"This is so much better" I say, truthfully. And I actually meant it. Spending my birthday with my family instead of 100 teenagers I barely know, well that's an easy win. At least this me thinks so.
My mom and dad let me eat my breakfast and wake up, so they walk back downstairs.
I get up, and check my phone. A few messages from cousins. To be expected, I don't really have any friends.
I am not expecting Cody to wish me a happy birthday.
His seventeenth is in a month, do I wish him a happy birthday? What's the protocol for ex-boyfriends birthdays? Our relationship hadn't been long in adult-eyes but as far as first relationships go, I would say eight months wasn't that bad.
I shake my head at myself. That's nothing for me to worry about on my own birthday anyway.
The rest of the morning goes by taking calls from my grandparents in America. They found it weird wishing me happy birthday when it wasn't really my birthday back in America yet, but they wanted to be the first ones to do so. They are cute like that.
I decide to go to the mall to get use of that gift card I got. Might as well, as we have nothing else planned today.
Had we still lived in LA, I could have gotten my license today. Now, I have to wait another year. I don't mind though, I haven't been driving much anyway.
----
I walk around Liverpool One, taking in the beautiful Christmas decorations and the people running around trying to get some shopping done during work-breaks.
