The screams disappeared and we were left in silence. That’s when the phones started going. Every phone on the table began to ring as each one of our friends worried to where we all were. I looked up to the masked man. “Go on then.” He said in a flirty way which made me shiver. I reached for one phone. I turned to the window and opened it. Just before I threw the phone I looked at the screen. Eleven texts and two missed calls and two voicemails. The phone began to ring. A name popped up on the screen and I thought to myself that the person on the other end of the phone was more worried than we were. We knew what was happening – to an extent – but they don’t know anything. For all they know we could be dead and we would be if we didn’t do what he said. That thought made my arm through the phone out on to the concrete outside and smash into a thousand pieces. I picked up the next and did the same. I did it over and over. Not one person didn’t have missed texts or calls all from friends, family and some had unknown numbers showing that cliques don’t matter in real life. As I turned back for the last two phones I noticed everyones face. Each shocked and terrified at to what was to come but somehow I wasn’t panicking like them. I think it was because I have already dealt with shock within the last week that I was still numb. I needed to help everyone here. Somehow I would. I looked at the two phones on the table and looked up to the masked man. He wasn’t there.
“Hannah, where did he go?”
“I think to check the other class rooms. He locked the door though.”
“That doesn’t matter.”
“Becca don’t do something stupid.” I looked at her with a too-late look. She laughed but then returned to a worried look.
I got up and turned to the table picking up the phone similar to mine. I turned the phone on silent and off vibrate. I slid open the drawer next to me and put the phone inside. I picked up the other phone and threw it out the window. Now my job was done I sat down next to Hannah. “It’s sorted. I’ll get us out of here.” I waited a minute and then opened the draw keeping my eyes on the door at all times. I went to the phone book. It was Mrs Gregg’s phone. I knew she was good friends with Nick. I ran through the list hoping she had his number. Nicks name glowed at me. I clicked it and it began to call him. I put my head on my knees and let my hair hang down around me so no one could see my face. I put the phone to my mouth.
“HELLO!!! ARE YOU OK? WHAT'S GOING ON?”
“SHH! Nick?” I whispered.
“Becca?” He said with shock and worry.
“We are in Mrs Greggs class room. He is keeping us in here. Can’t talk.” Then I heard the lock rattle in the door. I slid it down my leg and along the floor behind the chest of drawers next to me. The phone was still on but I couldn’t hear anything on the other end.
“Is that all the phones out?”
“Yes.” I lied. I hope Nick was still there so he could hear what was happening.
“You.” He pointed to Mrs Gregg. “Get out. Go give the police this. Don’t come back.” He handed her a note. She got up and looked at all of her students and then took the note. He opened the door and let her out. “Now you lot. What to do with you?” He looked along the room and gave a creepy smile. I squeezed Hannahs hand. “Boys over there.” He pointed to the corner with the desk. “And ladies.” He winked at us and my stomach turned. “Over there.” He pointed to the opposite corner. I pushed the phone further in so I was completely out of sight then got up. I looked at the boys across the room. All of their faces were worried not just for themselves but us too. This guy was a freak and the boys couldn’t do anything. Each one wanting to serve their “duty” and protect us but they had to just wait.
