So y'all are probably pretty upset that this is the first time I'm editing in two months. Needless to say school got (and still is) hectic. But with Thanksgiving just around the corner, I figured now would be the time to write this. Lord only know when I'll update again, but enjoy! :)
"So he just got down on one knee in that grungy elevator and asked?" Cristina said. She examined the ring on my hand looking about as shocked as I was. "I never pictured you as a ring type of person, but I must say he did a fine ass job because that thing is a rock."
"I just feel bad because he spent so much money on it I feel like I have to wear it!" I said. "He told me I didn't have to if I didn't want to but I don't know it just feels wrong to leave it sitting on my bed side table." Cristina nodded in agreement right before her pager beeped.
"Yes, a gun shot that went right through the aorta. Happy new year to me," she winked before jogging in the opposite direction. I turned to the nurses station to find all of the nurses trying to catch a glimpse of the ring. I sighed and put my hand up on the counter and they all rushed over to look at it. Oh's and ah's escaped from their mouths.
"Dr. Grey you're one lucky girl," Nurse Olivia said.
"I agree. If I had a man who looked like that AND gave me a ring that like, I'd consider myself having the world at my finger," Nurse Emma said. The other nurses nodded their heads in agreement. My pager interrupted the small chatter. I turned and went down to the E.R. and met the patient in the trauma room. As I entered everyone looked up and I caught a glimpse of Derek, who threw me a quick smile before assessing the head trauma again.
"What do we have?" I asked as I tied the gown on.
"John Gilbert, age 36, passed out at his daughter's birthday party and hit his head on the coffee table. Check the abdomen, Grey," Hunt ordered. I felt around on all of the quadrants and every thing felt normal. I pulled over the ultrasound just to double check. I squeezed the cool jelly on the man's abdomen and moved the doppler around.
"The abdomen seems clear. No free fluid, tenderness, or rigidness. Anything else?" I asked.
"I think that's all for now,Grey. Thanks," Hunt said before continuing his central line.
"Ah damn it," Derek said as the monitor began to beep. "His right pupil is blown. He needs an emergency craniotomy. Let's move people!" I moved aside as they pushed the gurney down the hall and into the elevator.
I went back upstairs to round on my patients. Normally an intern would do it but I had nothing better to do. I checked on Mr. Cleasy first who had had a bowel obstruction removed a few hours earlier.
"How are you feeling, Mr. Cleasy?" I asked as I entered the room.
"Better since I can poop again," he responded with a smile.
"Well that's always good to hear," I chuckled. "Your vitals seem to be good, so I hope in a few days you'll be out of here and will be able to fix sewage systems again."
"Thank goodness because my receptionist said that I've had a lot of missed calls today. The sooner I get out of here the better." I smiled at Mr. Cleasy before leaving the room. I went to the nurses station to update the chart.
"Oh hey," I said looking up and noticing Alex was filling out a chart across the desk. "Why aren't you on the peds floor?"
"Checking up on an older patient that I had intern year," he said as he continued writing. An awkward silence came between us as we wrote the pertinent information down. "So let me see it." I stuck out my hand and my cheeks grew rosy. Alex inspected every diamond with great awe. "Damn Mer," he said still looking at it, "Derek did a fine ass job."
"Thanks," I replied. "I told him he didn't have to spend so much money on me but of course he did the opposite of what I said. You men never seem to listen.
"Us men like to treat our women right or else we get kicked into the dog house," Alex snickered. He put my hand back onto the counter as I finished my chart. "Speaking of Derek, where is he? Normally you two are out of here by 7:00 and it's almost 8:30."
"He had an emergency craniotomy and went into surgery about an hour ago. Funny enough I was just about to go down there and see how much longer he had. Wanna come with?" I asked.
"No thanks, I'm pretty sure Jo is waiting for me at home, hopefully with some food. I'll catch ya later Mer," he said before walking away. I tucked my pen back into my coat pocket before heading down to the O.R. I put on my scrub cap before entering the scrub room and grabbed a mask out of the container. The doors opened before me and I entered a familiar territory.
"Hey," I said to get Derek and everyone elses attention. Derek looked at me and smiled, even though I couldn't see it. His eyes glistened a certain way whenever he smiled beneath his mask. "Uh I was just wondering how much longer you were gonna be."
"Probably close to an hour. You can go home without me, no big deal," he said while looking down at the exposed brain.
"Okay, I'll see you later," I said before turning around.
"Love you," Derek said as I reached the door. I looked back and nodded in agreement. I went up to the attending's lounge to get my street clothes. I changed and went down to the lobby to only find that it was raining for the third time today.
"Gosh dang it," I mumbled realizing that I left my umbrella in my cubby upstairs. It wasn't worth going back to get it so I made a run for my car. I got inside my Mercedes with my Converse dripping in water and my wavy hair soaked. I reached back into the back seat to get the towel to dry off my face.
The ride home was just the same as any other. The rain made it somewhat difficult to see but nothing I wasn't able to handle. I reached the corner of Chestnut and Lincoln right as the light turned red. Seattle seemed so desolate this evening with no one on the streets or on the roads. It was abnormal. I looked and saw that the other light was turning yellow, so I began to ease of the brake. Their light turned red just as mine turned green and I began proceeding through the intersection, that is, until someone else's car was inches away from mine.
Derek's POV
The craniotomy was painless and routine. The patients vitals were stable coming out of the O.R. and I told my intern to keep an eye on his ICP. I went up to the attending's lounge and changed out of my scrubs. I made my way down the lobby to see that it was raining for the third time today. Meredith did tell me to take an umbrella in to work today but I obviously didn't listen. I put the hood up on my jacket and made a mad dash towards my car. I immediately got into the Porsche and shook some of the water off of my jacket. I started the car and made my way home.
The drive was the usual, but the rain was a hard steady one and made it a little difficult to see, but nothing I couldn't handle. I managed to take my wet rain jacket off at the stoplight of Greenway and Wabash. I could see red and blue lights up ahead a couple of stoplights, probably at the corner of Chestnut and Lincoln. I made my way down another stoplight and the lights got brighter. The flashing lights were definitely at the corner of Chestnut and Lincoln. I neared the lights and saw that a small red sports car had t-boned another car, but I couldn't tell what kind of car.
"The idiot probably thought it was fun to drive super fast in the rain," I said to myself. As I got closer and closer to the accident I veered off to the left a little bit to try to catch a glimpse of the car the seemed to be in the worse shape between the two.
My heart stopped. I froze. I slammed on the breaks and put the car in park in the middle of the road. I unbuckled and flung open the door taking off in a dead sprint in the pouring rain. Because the car in the middle of the intersection with the drivers side door dented in completely, which was being opened with the jaws of life, was the black Mercedes that I see leave the driveway every single morning.
