3 months. It had been 3 months since the miscarriage and something just felt different between Derek and me. It's like he was being careful around me, afraid that with one slip of the tongue he would be kicked out of the house faster than he could run out. We hadn't had sex in 3 months either, which may be the cause of the tension and awkwardness between us.
"Hey," he said coming up from behind me and planting a soft kiss on my temple. He finished tying my trauma gown for me as I put on gloves. There were moments, moments like this where it didn't feel awkward. Moments where no matter how hard I thought, I swore the miscarriage was a bad dream.
"Hey," I said softly back to him with a small smile. "Trauma is about two minutes out, so you have a little time."
"Great, because I just ran down here from surgery and was afraid that I was going to be late," he told me while now standing beside me and flashing me a McDreamy smile. "Speaking of trauma, why are you out here? I thought it was a man with a probable brain bleed and an infant."
"Arizona got pulled into an emergency surgery, so she asked if I would take the infant since it has probable abdominal injuries," I answered. I put my hands on my stomach as I said the word infant, thinking that if only there was a child growing inside me. Derek and I's child. My thoughts however were completely interrupted by the sound of wailing sirens that approached. Derek squeezed my shoulder before heading off to the ambulance on the left and myself heading off to the ambulance on the right.
"Brooklynn Waters, 4 months, presenting with a very tender abdomen along with a laceration on her head after a hit and run accident on the freeway," the paramedic told me while handing me her chart.
"Alright take her to trauma room one," I instructed her and she did as I said. I looked over at Derek's ambulance as he too was already wheeling his patient inside checking for pupil reactivity.
Derek's POV
"What do we have?" I asked the paramedic as he opened the doors to the back of the rig.
"Steve Waters, 36, subconscious in the field but regained consciousness en route, severe head laceration and has a little bit of slurred speech. Hit and run accident on the freeway," the paramedic told me before handing me the chart.
"Mr. Waters, I'm Dr. Shepherd, do you know what happened?" I asked the patient while checking his pupils.
"My daughter, where's my daughter?" he asked worriedly.
"Don't worry sir, she is in very good hands. Is there anyone we can call for you?" I asked as we began wheeling him into the emergency room.
"I need to see my daughter," he said once more before seizing in the middle of the hall.
"Alright put him on his side!" I yelled. The seizure lasted about 15 seconds before it stopped. "Wheel him into trauma room two and do a full workup on him. You," I said pointing to a nurse, "find out who I need to call for Steve Waters. Try to get some family information and report it to me ASAP!" I said before running back into the trauma room where I found my patient seizing once more.
Meredith's POV
"Ultrasound is showing a little bit of free fluid in the abdomen but the spleen is trying to push above the stomach. She's going to need surgery right away," I said as sitting the portable machine down. "Edwards, I need you to go over into trauma room two and tell Dr. Shepherd I need him over here for a quick consult ASAP, " I told the resident and she quickly made her way across the hall.
"Dr. Shepherd said it will be a minute, that once he stabilizes his patient he'll be over," she told me. I briefly looked over the infants lab as her wails began to diminish since the pain medication set in.
