"So I heard you recently married?" my old friend Jane Curtis said to me, as we sat together upon a couch she had in her living room. Faking a smile as I took in her aging blonde hair and pale skinned face that I could tell she tried very hard to keep looking as young as possible, I nodded. I didn't really want to talk much with her, yet my mother insisted we all spent time at a party at her house with some other old friends. So, like any other trying-to-be-good daughter would, I agreed and followed them over.
"Luke!" I called, as he sat talking to some other couples I barely recognized in the dining room conjoined off. Coming over to me, in his fine tuxedoed-self, I introduced him. "This is my old friend Jane," I told him, as he, from behind, came over and wrapped his arms around me on her brown couch. "We went to the same high school here once I moved back," I ended, sending Jane to nod up at him. I couldn't see exactly his response to all I was saying, but I presumed he was merely listening.
"So nice to meet you, I'm glad Charlotte actually has a decent man for once," Jane giggled, even though it was not funny at all. She knows, unlike Luke, that the only man in which I had actually dated before was Jack and apparently everyone disapproved of him...
"Nice to meet you too, but I wouldn't say that necessarily..." he chuckled back, letting go of me completely and coming over to sit in the middle of Jane and I.
"Oh well a handsome man like you must have a good personality," Jane said once more with a lipstick stained smile, as she fixed her coated on eye makeup quickly with a dash of a finger.
"That is very nice of you to say, if only my own wife said it more often..." Luke replied with a nudge, sending me to look over to Jane and shrug. I didn't realize I didn't say it that much. I thought without a care, as Jane laughed over at me and then went back to looking to Luke.
"My ex-husband never really cared much to tell me either," she sadly admitted, making me roll my eyes and remember that Jane once actually had a long-term love in her life, other than all of those one night stands she had. I think it was safe to say that she really wasn't the best of friend that I could have chosen to have, but, her parents were rich and that made mine happy.
Taking a sip of my wine, as did Luke, but with his casual beer, I couldn't help but try to imagine a way out of this ungodly boring party, as well as Jane's terrible flirting with my husband, which I presumed would not go much further...
"I'll leave you two to get acquainted," I told them, picking myself up from the hard couch and placing my wine glass on the coffee table in front. I will not be stuck with Jane any longer... I thought to myself, not looking back once, as I started my stride through the formal entrance to get my way over to my parents. As I was about to pass by the front door, however, I noticed a few loud knocks on it from the other side, sending me to stop in my tracks and look straight to it.
"Hello?" I questioned, about to go over to open the fine wooden door, when I noticed an enveloped letter come flying out from under the crack of it and hit me at the feet. It's nearly seven at night, who would be delivering mail at this time? I questioned, picking up the noticeably dirty, white envelope and reading the front of it.
Miss Charlotte Rose Levinstin
Creasing my eyebrows in confusion, it looked as if the letter was appointed to me, which made no sense. Why would they send my mail here? I thought, looking back quickly to the living room where Luke and Jane still hit it off. Sighing, I didn't want to go over and ask them what the letter was about, so instead, decided to open it up myself in private. Better alone than with those two. I thought, leaning back against the hallway so I was out of sight of everyone else on either ends of me and opening up the envelope to read the messily written letter that was inside.
