One Jump Ahead

"Come back here you street hedgehog!"

The guards chased Sonic on the rooftops of the village. He was a pretty fast runner so the guards always had to have twice the man power than usual on robberies. The guards almost caught up to him,but only because the roof space ended. Sonic looked down at what he stole.

"All this for a loaf of bread?"

Sonic jumped down from the rooftop,but ended up face planting into the ground. Sonic grabbed some of the clothes that were hanging up.

"There he is!" Shouted one of the guards.

"You won't get away that easily!" Another shouted.

Sonic held out his bread.

"You think that was easy?"

Sonic took the grabbed garments and threw them over himself,pretending not to be him. He spotted the nearest group of people.

"Mornin' ladies."

One of the ladies was named Rouge. She took a few steps closer to him.

"Getting into trouble a little early,aren't you,Sonic?"

"No,no. You're only in trouble if you get caught."

A guard then grabbed Sonic by his collar.

"I'm in trouble."

Just then,the guard's hat came down over his eyes.

"Perfect timing,Tails! As usual."

Tails gave thumbs up to Sonic as they dashed away. The guards tried to get Sonic but he sang,

"One jump ahead of the breadline. One swing ahead of the sword. I only steal what I can't afford. That's everything! One jump ahead of the lawmen. That's all,and that's no joke. These guys don't appreciate I'm broke!"

Sonic kicked down some barrels that landed on the heads of the guards. They got angry and tried to throw knives at Sonic.

"Riffraff! Street hedgehog! Scoundrel! Take that!"

Sonic barely dodged the knife. He tried to reason with them.

"Just a little snack,guys."

"Rip him open,take it back guys!"

Tails helped Sonic get away from the guards again. Sonic started to sing again.

"I can take a hint,gotta face the facts. You're my only friend,Tails!"

"Did he say snails?"

Sonic then jumped into a house with a bunch out ladies in it,including Cream,Maria,and Sally. They looked at him,disgusted,and sang.

"Oh it's sad,Sonic's hit the bottom. He's become a one-man rise in crime. I'd blame his parents except he hasn't got em."

Sonic sat on the window sill of the room.

"Gotta eat to live,gotta steal to eat. Tell you when I got the time!"

Sonic was then pushed off the window sill.

"One jump ahead of the slowpokes. One skip ahead of my doom. Next time,gonna use a nom de plume...one jump ahead of the hit men. One hit ahead of the flock. I think I'll take a stroll around the block..."

The crowd came once again.

"Stop,thief! Vandal! Outrage! Scandal!"

Sonic was surrounded by a crowd. He backed up into the door of the women building.

"Let's not be too hasty."

Sally then opened the door and hugged and kissed Sonic.

"Still I think he's rather tasty."

Sonic pushed Sally away and continued to try and talk to the angry mob.

"Gotta eat to live,gotta steal to eat. Otherwise we'd get along!"

Then everyone just shouted,

"WRONG!!!"

Sonic and Tails managed to get out of the craziness without getting hurt. Sonic tried to run,but everywhere he went,there was a crowd. Sonic was singing while running.

"One jump ahead of the hoof beats." "Vandal!"

"One hop ahead of the hump." "Street hedgehog!"

"One trick ahead of disaster." "Scoundrel!"

"They're quick,but I'm much faster!" "Take that!"

Sonic then ended up near a window. He looked back at the crowd,and then started to sing to them.

"Here goes,better throw my hand in. Wish me happy landin. All I gotta do is jump!"

Sonic then jumped out the window and away from the crowd. He split the bread into two,giving one to Tails and keeping one for himself.

"And now...we feast."

Tails took a big bite out of his piece,but Sonic noticed two young Choas in the garbage looking for food. Sonic got up and gave his piece to the Choas.

"Here you go."

The Choas took the bread thankfully. They whispered,

"Thank you."

"No problem,Cheese and Chocolate."

Sonic looked back at Tails,who eventually gave his piece to the Choas. Then,horns roared through Sonic's ears. He ran to find a prince on a horse. He eavesdropped on two of the villagers.

"Must be heading to the palace."

"Another suitor for the princess."

Then,the two little Choas ran into the prince's way. He took out his whip. The Choas were frightened.

"Why you filthy-"

Sonic then ran in front of the Choas and blocked the attack.

"Hey! If I were as rich as you,I could afford some manners."

The prince growled at Sonic.

"I'll teach you manners!"

The prince flicked Sonic across the road and into a puddle of mud,along with Tails. Sonic scrapped the mud off himself,and everyone laughed. Sonic then got a smirk on his face.

"Hey,Tails! It isn't every day you see a horse with TWO rear ends!"

The prince whipped around. He was insulted.

"You are a worthless street hedgehog. You were born as a street hedgehog. You will die a street hedgehog. And only your FLEAS will mourn you."

The prince turned around and started to head back to the castle. Sonic gritted his teeth and ran towards the prince. As fast as Sonic is,the gates shut right in his face.

"I'm not worthless! And I don't have fleas..."

Sonic dropped his head.

"Come on,Tails. Let's go home."
